Thanks to shutzee, I had the original measurements for the side splash support/dinette division and I made a perfect replica!!! I am SOOOOO EXCITED- it actually fit PERFECTLY! Once I removed all the weird stuff the P.O. put in. It looks so good! Tomorrow I will be getting some more finish nails, some aluminum sheet, 3m polish a buffing wheel and tonight I'll order some trim for the edges off VTS and by the end of next week it will look totally original! Thanks everyone for the help and making this possible! After I took these pictures, I shellacked the birch with 2 coats of amber (all they had available at the store) and will add the clear coat tomorrow before I install the aluminum sheet... The reset of the cabinetry is painted and I am really tempted to use paint remover and restore them! Can't do it before the trip- but it would sure be nice to get it done after. First project I've done on my own and I'm hooked! on that last picture- does the birch just end? I don't see anything to nail it to-is anyone else's like this from the dinette seat box or is there something more there?

Your question about the birch just ending - yes, mine just ends exactly like your last picture shows. Glad you got your measurements. Sorry I didn't get them to you, but everything looks great! Congrats!

ok- then I won't add another support or another piece. although, I suspect- If I were to renovate this thing- I'd be improving upon and replacing with better quality wood/craftsmanship a lot of original things... but for now- I'll stick to simulating the original feel-just with poplar and screws vs pine and nails. I'd have a heavier trailer for sure! I can't wait to install this tomorrow with buffed aluminum panels! My husband is amazed by how beautiful the shellack is! I won't have a hard time convincing him we need to restore the original finish of the rest of the cabinets to match. That should help with resale too. Why would anyone paint the cabinets anyway---I understand if the walls had water damage--painting sorta makes more sense...but just cabinets? so weird. does anyone know if this is normal? does everyone just leave it this way? I really dislike the idea of my bed/couch being but up against the road dirt and drafts from the cargo door. It just looks really sloppy too.

Thanks, glad I could help. You did a really great job! Yes that bed/cargo thing is normal. Mobiltec is working on a 59 Airflyte now and I think he is moving it higher. I haven't decided yet. There's some sandpaper out there that strips the paint off really nice. It's green and I think a 3M product. I had a lot of paint in mine and I found it worked better than stripper.

I checked my supplies and it is a 3M product called SandBlaster made for stripping. Of course you will have to sand it with a fine paper before shellacking.

There's some sandpaper out there that strips the paint off really nice. It's green and I think a 3M product. I had a lot of paint in mine and I found it worked better than stripper. If I were rebuilding a trailer- I would change a lot of these oddities...and moving the bed higher would be great all by itself without even considering doing it to ameliorate this weird problem. Good Going Mobiltec! He's a resourceful/practical guy. Thanks for the specific name- My 3m store people don't carry all the 3m products and they are making me bring in part numbers so they can order my super duty rubbing compound. I can't believe it! Hope they've heard of the sandpaper-otherwise- I get to look up part numbers for them. I really hope I can pull off the paint somehow and soon! I am due with child #2 in August and I seriously doubt I'll get more than an hour to myself for the following 3-6 months or more. These days, my son's 2 hour naps and an hour or 2 in the evening when my husband supervises him are my only free moments IF all the laundry and dishes are done and dinner is already in the works of course... I can't believe I'm working on a trailer...and I can't believe working on it feels like a vacation-and is this stimulating.

oh, forgot to say thanks and that I thought it was pretty nice looking too since I seriously don't have the right tools and was working off the back of our truck's tailgate. I did get some really nice poplar lumber though-I'm a little in love with poplar wood.
I need longer drill bits a round file, a wider variety of nails and screws, an assortment of adhesives, longer c clamps, more quick grip clamps, a band saw for metal, better tin snips, a better buffer with better buffing mediums and much stronger forearms and hands...
I also forgot to say I cut the sheet aluminum today and tried polishing it up---it sorta looks better than it came from the warehouse-and I mounted the aluminum base for the shelf/stove. will post pictures tomorrow--showing progress to completion (hopefully)
Thanks for all the help- this forum seriously made everything I just did possible-and it looks that good because of your help!

DIYmom, you've got this disease and it's seriously bad. NEW TOOLS? We all want/need them. LOTS OF SCREWS AND HARDWARE? We all hoard them. Stronger arms and hands come with the work. Oh, and lifting said 10 pounder come August. LOL.
I hope by now you've realized that this addiction doesn't cure itself. The only cure is another little trailer...
