I am new here so please take it easy on me. After having a bad experience hauling my new to me 1972 lancer 16ft TT for the first time I want to rebuild the brakes. The TT was rewired with a four pin flat and the wires that run to the brakes were cut at the backing plates. So for starters what kind of wire and plug do I need? 5 flat or 7 flat? My vehicle is a Chevy Trailblazer with the factory 7 round connector. Thank you in advance.

You want a trailer "industry standard" round seven way plug.
"Toss all the flat wire four way stuff". Make sure you also use the correct seven way wire colors and wire gauges when you rewire it.

Yup, John's right.
7 way cords can be purchased with these gauges/colors: White is Ground, 10 gauge Blue is Brakes, 12 gauge Black is 12v +, 12 gauge Red is L. Turn, 14 gauge Brown is R T, 14 gauge Green is Tails, 14 gauge Yellow is a spare or backups, not normally used...It's the middle post on a 7 way. (14ga)
Note: DO NOT use the 7 way diagram from *eTRAILER*. It is wrong and causes all sorts of confusion.
You should be able to re-wire your backing plates. Run a 12/2 cable to the front Junction box and attach to the 7 way cord there. I use a regular 2 gang electrical box near the tongue. Ample room and easy connections.
