Hi all..
I picked up our 1971 Airflyte in Merrimack NH in December of 2010 for $100
Here's what it looked like~
It was not the kind of camper that a weekend of 'paint and TLC was going to fix, so I decided to
gut it and start from scratch. I had never done anything like this before but I'm relatively handy
so I started tearing in to the job..
Note the floor color difference..yuk!
Also note the lack of framing on the front wall.. it was just a pile of rotted wood dust.
I wondered if it was even possible to fix up at this point, put I soldiered on.
I got myself a Kreg tool / jig and started removing rotted wood and reframing.. I probably
replaced half the framing in the camper..
I made a little demonstration video of the Kreg tool that seemed to be helpful to folks
on the other forum, maybe a new person here will find it useful too~
Lots of framing later I put down the new subfloor...
While all this was going on the weather was improving so I started on the exterior as well..
No fancy paintjob, I was on a budget.. $50 worth of Rustoleum and I was off and painting.
I made another demo video.. this time of cheap spraypainting..
Here it is once the painting was mostly complete... windows had been removed,
cleaned up and installed with new sealer tape and the wings were refurbished as well.
Then it was time to get busy with Birch.. I'm no carpenter, but things went pretty well.
Despite not having the kitchen or rear couch/bed area done we took it on its maiden voyage in
September 2011 to the Historic Races at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.. A great time was had by all.
We've used it several times over the last year and a half and the rear portion of the interior is
completed..
We've been having a blast with our old Shasta.. still a work in progress~
..and now.. way later than I ever thought it would be, I'm starting the kitchen. We have been using
just a counter top with a Coleman stove and coffee maker.. that's really all you need LOL..
I've got some of Formicas new Anniversary laminate in red, and this week I'm getting the sink and cooktop.
(that's the Formica pattern I got)
Looks like I'll be learning about camper water supply and propane lines over
the next couple weeks.. We have trips booked the last weeks of July
and August, then again in the beginning of October.. I need to get busy!
