So I recently purchased a '65 forester and was obvious that it had some body damage that had been repaired. We were not too concerned because we were looking for a project anyway. The "gentleman" we purchased the trailer from told us that there was no water damage, upon closer inspection there is (and it has been cleverly hidden). He stated that all the lights work and after getting it home and unscrewing the lights we see that they are not even connected to the wiring. He stated that the heater worked, it does not. He stated that the appliances worked. They do not. We are fully aware that these old campers need a lot of work and he should have just told us everything is old, broke and needs replacing. There was no need to lie about EVERYTHING leaving us to find out on our own. VERY bad business considering we drove for hours and paid him in cash. Karma sir. Just wait.

Welcome to the madness, isn't it great. My experience was I found "after" I purchase it, the owner said everything in working order, NOT. Upon inspection, I found that there had been a fire in the back. I wanted a project and I now have it. It's just like a itch, it feels so good to scratch. Happy scratching.

Luckily we are able to fix the issues but there was just no need for all the lying. If he had told us the truth we probably would have bought it anyway.

The more reason to closely inspect before buying and not buy sight unseen. I know this is the way most people have to, since they can't find locally. I would suggest offering a small non refundable deposit . Also, before going to look at one, sit and make a check list to go over when you get to it so not to forget anything in the excitement. Maybe we should put a printable one on here to access for printing

Sorry to hear that happened to you. I just sold my other trailer to make room for my Golden Falcon. The one I sold was an old '79 Prowler that had issues, mainly rot in the rear corner. I spent an hour creating an ad with lots of photos and point blank descriptions. The trailer still sold in less than 24 hours and at $40 under my asking price. It's a shame that there are cons at every turn these days that ruin it for honest people who expect others to be honest. I like your idea pirateslife.

To quote my ole grand daddy "Are all salesmen liars or are all liars salesmen" not true in all cases but true often enough for it to be advisable to proceed with caution when buying a used RV.

Maybe you just misunderstood when he said they worked the last time he used it back in 1925. This really does happen and especially amongst non-salespeople, whom are really needing to make a sale. It is an unfortunate circumstance, and it points out how much you need to know ahead of shopping. the "truth" probably was that everything worked and was okay, "last anyone knew"....

The old interior fresh paint on the ceiling and glue a new section of paneling on top of rotted wall trick!

At what point does the buyer have some responsibility in checking out the goods that they are purchasing?
If you make a list of all the red flags that are discussed here each week, it would be easy to tell a "good one", from a pig in lipstick.

It was kind of hard to find out that the PO had lied to us about the tow lights working she we were standing out in the -40 weather this December trying to hook her up!

LadyW with weather that warm I assume you were in your string bikini so I don't understand the problem. You are my hero when it is that cold I would be found in the house by a warm fire not out buy a trailer. The only reason I can think of to be out in that kind of weather when I didn't have to be would be to be moving to a warmer climate.

I've been reading posts for the last 2 hours and waiting to leave my one parting comment. I'm a lurker learner. The PO of our trailer wasn't a liar at all. Some things, I truly believe, she just didn't know were problem areas. And, of course, we hadn't found this forum yet to even know to look for them ourselves. She had it plugged in and waiting to show it to my husband, the first night it was posted on CL, had 3 people in line to look at it within an hour. The lights, inside and out, all lit up, only one tail light needed a jiggle and better connection to tow it home. (exception being the gas lamp-a propane tank was not hooked up to check that or the stove) She said she remembered using the refrigerator on hunting trips, but it wasn't getting cold since she plugged it in. When I did the first morning inspection, I discovered, we had an ice box.
