I have an original Dometic reefer in my 63 and it gets cold but I can't seem to keep it lit consistently. It's sporadic and unpredictable. I was wondering if, since the cooling unit is still good, why I couldn't use a later style LP burner on it. I have the dreaded Klixon valve, which no one makes parts for anymore.
I thought if I could rob all the parts off of a non-circuitboard controlled 2 way, like the RM 2351 Dometic, that it might work.
Ideas?

Might. I've seen it done. The biggest issue is "how long will the cooling unit last" after retrofitted. They tend to die.

If it won't stay lit, I would check the pilot flame and how well it envelops the thermocouple. I've seen thermocouples that needed to be bent to sit more fully in the pilot flame, I've seen burners suck the pilot flame away from the thermocouple, and also have seen pilot flames that were very vulnerable to wind gusts...

Cowcharge is right. Blow air around the burner to clean debris and sand the thermocouple to make sure it has good contact. (adjust as above) Check the chimney and clear if necessary.
Sorry, sometimes just get above the problem..

I have tried most of what you guys have said. I have even added a small fan to carry the heat u across the cooling unit and out the top vent. I really would like to save it , if at all possible.
