Hi All, Really enjoying VTT and all the good, smart and friendly trailer folks here. So I thought I'd chime in and show you my 'new' 1960 Mobile Scout… the "other Shasta trailer". Similar in form to Shasta's of that era, but different in many ways. Personally I like the more rounded shape that Mobile Scout employed and the combination of two sheet metal forms. This particular specimen had been treated well and was given a partial restoration and 'freshen up' by a gentleman in Oregon. It's looking real spiffy, but I'm going to take it to the next level. My shop here in Santa Fe, Complete RV, will be helping me. I'd like to make some functional upgrades to plumbing and electrical for better off-grid/boondocking capacity. We're also locating a few places with hidden rot to assess that. That will really determine the scope of the work going forward. But right now she is very road ready (towed it 1200 miles to my home a few weeks ago) and everything works. It rolls down the road easily. FYI: I'm using the Andersen No-Sway/Weight Distr. hitch which is of a very unconventional design and really easy to use. I'm towing with a relatively light weight '03 Jeep Grand Cherokee with high output V8. The WD hitch keeps all 3 axles level and the Jeep handling well. The anti sway capabilities of the Andersen hitch are awesome! I don't have a lot of time right now to share some of my ideas and hopes for this trailer, but I will try to add to this thread later this evening. In the mean time, please enjoy the pictures I've posted here: s1281.photobucket.com/user/sligobeach2/library/ ...and I welcome your thoughts and comments. Thanks, Mike

It don't look to bad for a 64 year old trailer. After you raise it to the next level send us more pictures.

Bigbill: She thanks you for the compliment… but she's only 54 ;-)
After the work, it won't look too different. I'll be working on the stuff you can't see… and some systems improvements.

Well I know how to do math, now if I could learn how to type I would have it made. She don't even look bad for a 54 year old either.

Nice looking trailer Mike - I'd like to see it sometime. We're practically neighbors, I'm in Los Alamos, currently working on a '64 Shasta. Thanks for the tip re Complete RV.

I like it too! Wish mine had the *real* wood inside. My 65 has pale blond paneling with grooves...

Ahhh the weekend!
VIKX: Yes, the birch plywood is nice in most places and a nice salvaged hard wood floor was installed as well (not too visible in the pictures)… unfortunately the floor wasn't finished very cleanly, but truth be told that goes along nicely with the patina of most of the other original wood. What's not visible in the pictures are the places (usually below window sill line, inside of a cabinet or out of sight) where some cover up work was done to hide some past water leaks. You'll even notice in the dinette area as well as the kitchen backsplash there is brushed aluminum which was not part of the original interior scheme. Very handsome, but the downside is that it was artfully placed to conceal the plywood underneath, undoubtedly damaged by window leaks. In other restorations, I've seen perfectly good looking plywood on the interior, which when exterior metal is removed, is revealed to be fairly damaged by slow water leaks and moisture build up on the back side. Right now the trailer is freshly sealed and water tight, but in the name of creating a healthy environment and preventing further deterioration, the skin of this trailer will come off at some point… then the truth will be told! Fortunately, my shop is capable of removing and re-hanging the original skin, which is challenging if frame repair is done on the radius portions, and many restoration shops don't want to be bothered with. Formed sheet aluminum, I've been told, has become quite expensive as of late. Right now the Scout is in the shop for a full mechanical inspection to make sure she is truly safe and sound for regular use. She sits a couple of inches lower on the driver side, so leaf springs may be implicated there… and the wheel bearings will be repacked of course. There was also some questionable 12V wiring connections used (standard interior wire nuts) in exposed areas on the underside… so those will be replaced, among other small jobs for now.
YAS: Glad to know you live right here in Los Alamos. I'd love to see your Shasta. It looks like an excellent find. Superb very workable condition. In fact it looks a lot like my Mobile Scout 'before' exterior pictures (I've added those to the Photobucket set)…. same color scheme. How much work have you done on it and how far do you think you need to go? We could compare notes as both our trailer's progress. Right now I know what I WANT to do to mine… but haven't determined yet, what NEEDS to be done. I'm hoping the condition under the skin is reasonable. Complete RV Care here in Santa Fe is a good shop and really fills a need here. But if you drop off your trailer there, don't expect to get it back too quickly; they're quite busy and not so good at the communication part of the business, so come equipped with patience! The young guy, Dave Montoya who owns it, along with a couple of seasoned mechanics, are capable of the whole range of services, including restorations. He did some beautiful work on his own 70's Argosy trailer which you can see at their website. He also has a mobile truck for servicing RV's and trailers on location, which I think he spends a lot of his time doing. There are a lot of 'parked' mobile homes around Santa Fe. Stay in touch.

Just added more detailed description to the photos. Let me know if you have any more specific questions about the trailer. Later I'll post a few "project" ideas that should expand the off grid capacities of this rig, which are now somewhat limited. I'd love to hear your ideas and comments. s1281.photobucket.com/user/sligobeach2/library/

Thanks, gfgirl… The triangular window is the Mobile Scout icon. It's on all the doors from that era. They were made in Arlington TX, near Dallas. Never heard of Glendale. It definitely has that late 60's early 70's look and styling. Handsome. What are your plans for it? Also… you can call me Mike.. or Michael ;-)

What are my plans...well I'm just waiting for a couple of sunny days in a row to start taking the back end apart. By the time all is said and done the interior will have all new plywood, some of the ceiling and side framing replaced due to water damage and all windows new roof vent and seams re done with new putty tape. The floor seems solid so far where I've pulled up the linoleum. Cabinets reinstalled, new upholstery and curtains. I may actually get to camp in it someday, lol!
