In Manitoba Canada where I live they have a government controlled sign up in one day campground registration. You need to get up at 6:00 am and wait beside your computer and when it starts, frantically click on your browser trying to launch onto the site. The site crashes every year, stalls out, blocks people etc. it can take hours. This year it's worse then ever we have been sitting on the sofa watching the sunrise for over an hour, clicking away and still no where near getting a site... And this is the result of the government supposedly improving the system... Total hilarity! The only good thing I can say about it is that by the time you actually go camping you REALLY appreciate the great out doors...

I have never camped in a site that requires a reservation. Never...
And no government does anything correctly. Not yours, not ours, not any of them.

Some of our NP camgrounds are strictly first come first serve but most NP and State campgrounds have both. Holidays are the only time that it can be a problem getting a walk up one except for some the extremely popular and seasonal areas like Zion and Glacier NP.

As the Shasta Deluxe sales ad states, you can "...drop anchor anywhere", and so we do. Sometimes at a recognized campground, sometimes not. It's always fun however!
