Yesterday while Brenda was doing some of the last of the trash removal I grabbed the cordless drill and a wire wheel and started cleaning on the lower rail on the street side and found the VIN number but I now have a question, do the early Shasta's have just a 4 digit VIN number? Danny

Mine has a 4 digit vin # with the letter C before it (I think the "C" indicates which plant it was made at, but I could be wrong).

Thank you,I guess I need to clean a little more to see if the letter is there.
The tag beside the door says it was manufactured in Van Nuys,California. HRP

Mine also has the California tag . Also, I'm pretty sure the vin #s run in sequence at least on the early years. There's a member on here that keeps a log of vin#s to help people identify what year shasta they have if they're not sure.

A good trick on bringing out the vins I found on accident is a cell phone camera. Tried to get a pic of what I could see by eye on an old boat motor and the camera brought out all of it and could be read. Most do have a letter preceding them for the plant

Danny, generally speaking the VIN appeared in two places on the tongue. One was a small tag welded inside the streetside rail, just rearward from the coupler assembly. The second was on the curbside outer rail. It is stamped directly into the steel, rather than tagged. It is s fairly shallow stamp though, so be a bit careful brushing looking for it.

Yes mine appears to be the raised tag on the street side,,I'm going to have to check to see if thee is a vin number stamped into the rail on the curbside. Danny
