Hi all,
We have made a lot of great progress and since we are almost finished pulling up the old floor, it has come time to design the new one. We have settled on a blue and white VCT tile combo. We will cut down to 9" tiles. The issue that has come up is that we have a drop-down floor 42" x 44.5" in front of our galley. To me, it is a focal point as you see it when you enter the camper (you step up in the camper then down into the drop-down). I really want to do that portion of the floor a diamond pattern and the rest of the area checkerboard. BF wants all checkerboard.
Help me convince him otherwise!!!! Wouldn't that diamond pattern help "break the eye" and help with any imperfections to the eye? Oh and add a focal point? Yeah, I may be stretching it a bit but I think it would be really cool to have that feature. Would there be any other reason to give that would strengthen my proposal?
It'll be great either way but now's the time to plant the seed.
TIA Martha.

I'm anxious to see what advice viewers give you. I have an architect brother-in-law who is recommending a diamond pattern, over the checkerboard. Our trailer does not have a drop floor, so all the flooring would be one pattern. In my case, seems like if diamond were used, you would need more tile due to all the cuts, assuming a center line down the middle of trailer. As you've stated, regardless what you choose, you want the floor to be a focal point.

If properly cut the pattern shouldn't make much difference. A sq.ft. is a sq.ft.

Having a different pattern in the drop down area would be good for safety - reminding people it drops down so they don't fall. LOL, I speak from experience. It would also look great!

I would want the project to look authentic. Combining diamond with a checkerboard pattern is not something that any original fabricator would do. Conversely, it is your trailer and you should have fun with it. Just be prepared for the outcome.

I vote for diagonal and checkerboard. I think it will look great. The only advantage to keeping the same pattern would be that it would make the space look larger where as two different patterns will cut the space. But you might have that anyway with the two different heights.

It is your trailer so make yourself happy. We prefer the diamond pattern to the checkerboard as it is more visually interesting. Is it original? NO. Have we heard any complaints about anything being non-original? NO. Do the drop down in a diamond pattern and enjoy!

If I were doing diamond, I'd want to make sure that the "points" of the diamonds fell on the edges. In other words, the height of the diamond would have to be the same as the height of the drop-down "walls". Then I'd start at the edges of the hole and work outward on the upper floor. It would bug me every time I looked at it if they didn't line up.
