Hi Everyone,
I wanted to see what everyone thought about “Frankensteining” old and new wheel wells to make a more enclosed wheel well.
My ’57 Westerner has wheel wells with open faced hemispherical wheel wells that look like this. They are being dry fit in the images below.
Below, you can see the new wheel wells. The new wheel wells are measured copies of the originals.
I was wondering would it be a worthwhile idea to combine the two into one, so it would, when finished look something like this? Purpose: Seals up the wheel well which would otherwise be directly mounted to the interior paneling.
Here are the original and the new. Dusty rear wheel well is the new one. Front one is the original.
See below: I propose trimming the old wheel well along the green line and cutting off the front flange indicated in red. The side flanges would also be cut away. Then, I thought the old one, once cut could be spot welded inside the new wheel well or even screwed together. With the final product looking something like what you see below, but the outside wheel well opening would be different due to design difference between my Westerner and a picture provided by Vikx in another thread:

The outward side flange created would have to be trimmed to fit the outside skin. I would seal the Frankensteined wheel wells as well.
