Looks like we have added to our fleet again. Found a 1958 Shasta Airflyte on marketplace that was just 5 minutes from our house. Went to look at it yesterday and will be back to pull it out today. Has been sitting in the weeds for 20 years. Has flat tires, a few wasp nests and a broken roof vent that has caused problems inside. A PO put in carpet so I’ll be interested to see what the floors is like. The best part is that it hasn’t been molested. It’s our first trailer that someone hasn’t painted with house paint and a roller. All trim and woodwork is original. But of course it’s missing the wings. This is going to be a frame off restoration. More to come.

We went to pick her up last night. Loaded two wheels and tires from our Airstream along with some tools into our truck. Hooked up and dragged her out of the weeds to a spot we could work on it. One tire was shredded and the other was flat. We swapped the shredded tire with one we brought and the other held air. We drove the 8 miles home! Today we photographed as much as we could and then started cleaning it out. Removed all the extras that had been installed by the previous owners. Ow it’s time to dig in. I’ll figure out how to post pictures today.

Now that the walls are off we start replacing everything that is damaged. When we took the street side wall off, the front of the roof fell.   |

We found dry rot all the way around the edges with the worst in the front and back. Also there were repairs done where the drain for the sink went through the floor in front of the wheel well. They didn’t remove the damaged wood but filled it up with silicone and nailed a piece of thin plywood over it.
Have been cleaning up the axle and springs. Removed the brake drums and found only the magnets. No hardware. Next up is sandblasting the frame. Supposed to be 110 degrees today so we’ll wait for cooler weather.

Update:
Finished tearing down to the bare frame. Sandblasted it and sprayed with thinned Rustoleum. Black in the middle with white tongue and rear bumper. Axle was cleaned up. New hardware for the brakes and new spring hardware. The axle is attached and we cut new floor boards this afternoon. Sound deadening wood on the bottom and 3/8 plywood on top just need to attach these. The wheels were rusted and bent so we have new wheels and tomorrow we get new tires. It’s nice that we are past the teardown stage and all the rust and rotted wood. Working with new parts is always better. I’ll get some photos posted soon.

Your progress is exemplary. I am enjoying your thorough work! For anyone wanting to gut a trailer, this is why we open it up. (All the rot is visible.) Finished with the wood flooring and just glued down the Marmoleum. Once the glue set, I installed the wheel wells. One was pretty messed up. Probably due to a flat tire at one time. Next step is to tape thick paper to the floor to protect it from getting scratched. I have been working on the windows during down time. I have 3 pieces of glass that need to be replaced. 2 broken and one rear side was changed to plexiglass. Same side as the damaged sidewall and messed up wheel well. My order from Vintage Trailer Gaskets is arriving today!  |
