Hello to you all!
I'm a male, mid-50's and luckily married to a fine woman who loves to camp as much as I do. We reside in Maryland, just outside DC and currently have a home-built 5' by 8' woodie Benroy style teardrop. It's not "vintage" but has the look and we have had fun dressing it up with 50's and 60's accessories like old gas lanterns and stove that I restored myself. It even won an award for best camper at a rally we attended in Connecticut.
Our teardrop has been a blast for the 15 or so years we have had it. We belong to the local teardrop trailer club and have enjoyed going to rallies as well as getting out on our own.
More frequently we are "State Park campers", i.e. most of the time we prefer more primitive camping over the busy family style private campgrounds. Living in the DC area, I have the need to get away every now and then to keep my sanity! Lately, however we have been spending more of our vacation time at my sister's place in Northern Indiana. She recently retired and moved to a lakeside home. We purchased a pontoon with her and have enjoyed visiting and experiencing lake life this past summer. Most of my family is in the area and I grew up there so it also gives us a chance to spend time with my other sister, numerous nieces and nephews, and my mother, who is 90 and in the beginning stages of dementia.
We haven't needed to take the teardrop to Indiana but recently my sister's youngest son, who has had juvenile diabetes since age 11 suffered health complications requiring him to need assistance. He has moved in with his mother and we no longer have a bedroom to stay in when we visit. She does, however have a large, shaded yard that is perfect for parking a camper.
The teardrop is great but in the interest of being more comfortable for a longer stay, we would like to find a stand up camper. After doing a fair amount of research, I think that getting a properly restored vintage camper would fit our taste and needs. With all the horror stories I am seeing about new camper construction, I think it would also likely be a more reliable option.
Our dream camper would be a mid-60's Kencraft. We love the unique layout but I tell you, it's near impossible to find vintage campers of any kind out on the East Coast! I broadened my search to include Indiana and areas in between but it's funny how 90% of vintage campers seem to be out west. I'm looking for something that is fully restored or nearly so. I'm handy but don't have a lot of time and energy for a big project. We are getting to the age where the years seem to be going by faster and we just want to enjoy our free time as much as possible.
Looking forward to seeing you guy's rigs and hearing your stories.
