Many of us use OSI gutter sealant now sold at Home Depot (2023) as a very clear sealant for screw holes and as a final sealant over J rail putty and other imperfections. I use the 5oz squeeze tube with the screw on lid (as opposed to the caulk tube)
To prevent a goopy mess:
Paint Thinner is your friend with OSI Gutter Seal. Put a smaller dab on the seam you are sealing and then smooth with a paint thinner dipped finger. Wipe your finger off with a piece of paper towel and throw on the floor. (so it doesn't cling to your finger) Keep your finger clean at all times and wipe often.
You want the OSI a thin coat rather than a more caulk like bead. It takes a little practice, but you can apply an almost unseen seal.
The paint thinner must be real paint thinner-the fake stuff won't work. Also, it reduces OSI after it dries but not completely.
Have fun and remember; practice makes perfect!

When I use the paint thinner with gutter seal, I apply when wearing rubber gloves. HF sells their 7 mill or 9 mil gloves at very good prices. You just have to make sure the glove fits the tip of your finger tightly. I prefer the 9 mil gloves, myself.
Cheers,
