This is something I'd forgotten.
Red paint / gel coat fades and becomes chalky when exposed to sunlight. Especially in places like Southwest Florida. I used soy based tractor paint on our trailer about 8 years ago (Cape Cod). Not a professional spray job, I used those little foam rollers and was happy with the results. There is only one spot in our driveway (uncovered) to park it and one side gets direct sun year-round. I think I gave the sunny side another coat about 2 years ago, but it became faded and chalky again.
I remembered using Penetrol on faded fiberglass when we had a yacht maintenance business in Florida, so I tried it on the camper. I washed the camper first, let it dry and then applied a fairly wet application of Penetrol using a cotton rag. It was amazing! The depth of color came back like magic. It has been a couple months now and it still looks great.

Penetrol does have a lot of uses other than as a paint additive (as a drying retarder). Several years ago, I painted some very old (175yr) house windows to be used on a work shed. I spent a lot of time preparing and painting, building casings, installing, only to see the paint peel and become useless in only a month or so. Off to the internet - one method used on very old buildings (think Jamestown, Newport) is to pretreat - with penetrol. How do professionals get a 20yr perfect paint job? It's been 5yrs now, and the paint job is holding up perfectly. Tall ships use penetrol to treat exposed wood. Touching up rust spots prior to paint, freshening fading or chalked paint, buffing fiberglass to a shine - even my mailbox after years of being battered by 60mph snow plows, stones, salt, and looking beat- pretreat it with penetrol, then finish paint. It adds a superball type finish that withstands abuse.

Hi Friends,
Interesting, Dad. I was not familiar with this product. Some research showed the following based on their product listing: Eliminates brush and roller marks to offer a smooth, clear finish
Oil-based formula can be used in various weather conditions
Levels the finish without cutting the paint Inhibits rust on metal surfaces
I wonder if it works for a paint job much older than yours. What was the dry time for your use? When you ran the boat business, did you also apply it with a rag?
