I feel pretty good about securing insurance for my scratch build. The thing I did right was register my camper as a 1972 Jayco trailer. The only thing Jayco about it was the original chassis with a VIN number. That could not be traced to verify anything. I ended up getting a Bonded Title through the state of Wisconsin, so they recognize it as a '72 Jayco. Had I titled as "home built," I would have had a lot of trouble getting it insured.
As discussed here, THE ONLY way to go is an AGREED UPON VALUE policy. I got it appraised by James Polk (...thank you John Palmer) for $26,500 that cost me $330. The insurance is Progressive through NCIS Insurance from Iowa. The annual premium for that amount is $421.
John Palmer noted that he pays only a bit more than that annually for his Spartan valued at $78K. When I questioned the NCIS folks about that, they replied that it varies from state to state. Apparently, although auto insurance in California is high, the RV insurance is cheap. That is the exact opposite here in Wisconsin.
Anyway, I'm happy and feel good about both the appraisal and the policy.
