Hi Friends, Took a some short breaks over the past two days to see if I could find the serial number (AKA a VIN) on what I think is a 1963 Shasta 1500. Shasta trailers can have the serial number in two locations. Sometimes you find numbers stamped on a small welded-on rectangular plate inside the C- Channel of the tongue. This corresponds to the upper green rectangle in the image below. The second location is in or around the area of the lower red rectangle in the image below. Extend your search below and in an arc @9" to the left of the lower red rectangle. In my search, I initially found the small rectangular metal plate with a 5 digit number stamped on it welded to the inside of the C- Channel of the tongue. Cool I thought. That’s the VIN. I go to AAA and they can’t find it. She says there are several trailers with that VIN. That’s just fabulous, I thought…. I am missing the discriminating letter(s) that go(es) is the front part of the serial number on Shastas. I go back the next day to searching for the serial number - this time on the outside of the curbside C- Channel on the tongue. This corresponds with the lower red rectangle in the image above. Nope, not at the top where it’s supposed to be. Was the guy who stamped the serial number drunk that day and he embossed the lower part of the tongue instead of the upper part? Where could it be?, I thought. I add some more paint remover to the lower part of the C- Channel and Eureka! I found it!. I do the happy dance. It's like finding buried treasure! It’s really hard to see once the old paint starts to disappear. A pencil and paper in hand with a rubbing of the surface and voila - I have the serial number. Finger shows where I found what I thought was the serial number.
Close up - can’t quite see it.
The Pencil is the boss.
BUT, the number on the small metal plate doesn’t match the PA 2674 on the outside of the tongue. I thought it was supposed to. Shouldn't they match? Cheers,
Rod

They usually match. In your case, I would go with the numbers on the outside of the tongue. The trailer could have been registered in a different state or whatever.

Well, I have an update. I am excited. I just discovered that once I looked about 4" to the left of the PA 2674, I could see what looked like a stamped number in the paint - barely legible. I look further to the left and then I can make out a few partial digits through the old paint. Could these digits match the numbers on the small steel plate inside the tongue? Turns out that the alphanumeric string PA 2674 appears to be a common ending to serial numbers on Shasta 1500's built in 1963 and 1964 at the Northridge plant. In our database, I just realized there are no less than 10 trailers with that same alphanumeric string at the end of the stamped serial number. When I get a chance, I will remove more old paint to confirm this and post a confirmation. When I am done, I expect to see: FS(5 digits) (4" gap) PA 2674. Cheers, Rod

Well Friends,
Cowabonga! 🎉 I got the paint off and the the stamped FS is now visible along with a set of 5 digits that matched the number inside the tongue.
Mystery solved.🔍
