One more step with my '48 Boles Aero renovation. I decided to take a look at the brakes. The trailer seems to have undergone a reno in the early '60s - turn signals and I've assumed electric brakes and a torsion axle (see separate post on the axle). There was a Kelsey selective resistor mounted on the tongue so I've assumed they are some vintage Kelsey units. First, the size. The hub is large, something like 12.5" in diameter. Then I pulled off the hum and what I found surprised me. I removed the plate-mounted pad. It weighed quite a bit. IMG_3017 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr It mounts on a 6-bolt flange. IMG_3014 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr So what are these brakes?

My 56 Aljo had this type of brakes. I'm not sure what they're called but mine were missing one of the big round magnets. Impossible to replace unless you can find used ones. I opted to go with a new axle and brakes.

Do you know if the brakes were original to the Aljo or a retrofit? I'm curious about the vintage.

They were definitely original but somebody had disabled them. One of the big round magnets was missing and a plate, I think. Can't remember... I found used parts but decided to not to go that way. (the company only had one wheel)
