I just bought a 1948 Boles Aero (BA). The shell is in good shape but the interior has seen much better days. The windows have all leaked and ruined the beautiful wood interior. Good thing I'm an avid woodworker that likes challenging projects, this is going to be one! I've got a lot of questions, but I'll start here: what's supposed to go in the hole to the left of the door? It doesn't appear original and I don't believe I've seen it on the other late-40's BA's I've seen online. It opens onto a shelf above the fridge, but there's nothing there. I'm guessing a small evaporative cooler? IMG_20200831_0001 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr Here's the other side of the trailer: IMG_20200831_0003 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr

Beautiful Boles! Really cool. Does it have a steel roof section in the middle? My friends have a 53 with the steel section. He replaced it with heavy aluminum. Still working on it.
The hole could have been a propane refrigerator vent. (not seeing a roof vent). It could have been for a window air conditioner as well. Most of these oldie trailers didn't have a propane fridge, so it wouldn't have needed a vent. Hard to tell.

Welcome!
The exterior looks in excellent condition for its age. I agreed with vikx, I think somebody cut a hole for an air conditioner. Is there an outlet nearby that’s relatively new?
Do you have any photos of the interior you can share?

Here's an interior pic of the space above the fridge where "the hole" has been opened into the side: IMG_20200829_102405758 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr I started cleaning out "Bolero" today in prep for resto. Here's a couple post-cleanout pics. First looking forward from the bed area: IMG_20200904_112359102 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr And looking back from the dinette area: IMG_20200904_112416670 by Charles Bechtel, on Flickr I was surprised to find a 24 gallon fresh water tank under the bed as I'd read they came with 10 gallon tanks. I could use a good reference on planning for proper trailer weight and balance. I'm not planning a true restoration, rather a "reimagining" that will provide a weekend trailer tailored better for my wife and I. The woodwork will remain a feature as that's my primary hobby.

I've restored campers in worse shape. It looks like surprisingly unmolested.
