We just finished grinding off the rust from our trailer. We used a product called POR 15 to paint the trailer. It was about $32 for a pint. We used cheap foam brushes to apply and it went a long way. We had plenty left over.

It's a good product for it's intended use. It's a primer that will adhere to rust.
Make sure that you top coat anything that will be exposed to the UV rays of sun, because it will turn to chalk in about six months on exposed areas.
