Hi Friends,
I am looking for advice on how to replace the screen material on a Hehr Front window assembly from my '57 Westerner.
The only way I can see is that I have to drill out a series of rivets.
Here is the assembly as mounted. This is made up of one main back assembly and two duel window pane assemblies on either side of the central window.
Here it is removed.
The two duel pane assemblies are attached to the main frame with rivets along the top trim of the duel pane assembly.
Are there any more attachment points?
Here is one of the assemblies. I will refer to the support that goes down the middle as the vertical cross brace.
Here is the vertical cross brace from the rear of the duel window assembly.
Note the 4 holes across the top. Those are for rivets to attach to the main back frame assembly. But then there are two pre-threaded holes on either side of the duel pane window assembly where a small fine threaded screw goes in. I will assume you just unscrew those screws as part of the duel pane window assembly removal.
Front side of hole - note the two holes on the frame that are closest to the screen
Rear side of holes below. The finger below points to one of the threaded holes. Not sure what you call those threaded holes. "Top edge" of photograph below is really the side edge" I forgot to rotate the window frame for the image.
Close up view
So, correct me if I am wrong - for Removal from the main window frame, do I need to drill out the four rivets along the top trim edge and unscrew the screws on the left side and the right side of the duel pane assembly?
Then - clean up, remove the vertical cross brace, remove the old screen, insert the new screen material, reattach(re-rivet) the vertical cross brace and then re attach the duel pane window assembly to the main window assembly with 4 rivets along the top trim edge. Is that correct?
Do I need a special rivet for the top row of holes or just use pop rivets? The original assembly shows what look to be filed down rivet heads. My thumb and forefinger point to two of the sanded rivets. There is a third one visible in the photo.
Since these four rivet holes are below the brow, can I just leave them as pop rivets since they will be unseen?
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Rod
