I am currently restoring (actually completely rebuilding) a 1964 Shasta SCS. I am to the point of re-installing the skin and replacing some as well with new metal. My dilemma is with the Z stripe. I am replacing the skin on the curbside and am not sure how to duplicate the stripe to match the old metal which is of course unpainted (the stripe that is). I purchased the new metal from Hemet RV Siding and took a scrap to see how I could simulate the stripe by removing the white paint. I used Jasco's best paint stripper and it wouldn't even touch the paint! Is my only option to use some chrome tape on the new metal and settle for that? I am curious how others have dealt with this as I am certainly not the first to face this problem. Thanks in advance for any help and this is a GREAT website by the way.

Thanks, that's a great tutorial however as I read it I can't see where he had a problem removing the paint on the new panels for the bare metal stripe. I cannot get the paint stripper to even soften the paint on the new metal let alone remove it. I left it on for 15 minutes and when I attempted to scrape off the paint, the stripper wiped off like I had brushed water on it. It did not react with the paint whatsoever. I guess I will try it again and leave it on a little longer. The temperature was about 80F outside and it was overcast so I know the sun didn't dry up the stripper.

nccamper's post says that he buffed it off with 0000 steel wool.

Google aircraft paint remover. Try that, it should work.

I left it on for 15 minutes and when I attempted to scrape off the paint, the stripper wiped off like I had brushed water on it. Jasco semi paste worked for me with 0000 steal wool. I may have started with 000, but it didn't come off easy.
Hemet may have changed suppliers.
