Happened just yesterday, I found a great deal on a camper with a great interior and needing some minor framing work and she has the title... here are some good questions in my conversation (and her answers) that people can keep in mind for others before believing a blanket "Has title" mentioned in an ad and driving hours to see something with a screwed up title... (I am NOT buying this one)...
Q1 Is the title in your physical possession? YES
Q2 is the title in your name? NO
Q3 Is the title signed? YES! (I don't believe you...sooo)
Q4 Is it signed on the back? YES
Q5 Is it signed on the front? NO!!!
Q6 What state is the title in IOWA!! (I guess we won't be going over to their house to sign the front of a title for a camper they sold 10 years ago then)
But she has a Bill of Sale with the guys signature, a bill of sale is worthless but I play along since at least I would have two signatures to plead my case with the tax office.
Q7 So let's clarify... is there a date on the Bill of Sale? YES, 2008, 10 years ago (now useless AND worthless)
Q8 OK Back to the title, When it was signed on the back was it dated also? YES 2008, 10 years ago. That is a $250 late fee in my state even IF they allowed me to do it missing a signature.
PASS!!!

Every state is different. If it was a good deal I would have said you go get title in your name then I will buy it. Other wise I would have passed also. I have seen a few that I thought was a lost cause, but the seller went to BMV and came up with a clear title. Another title caution is the color of the title. Ohio always gave you a yellow title if no liens. Then fifteen or more years ago they started going with a white title, if you buy a unit with a yellow title from the old days you can't take it to another state so you have to register it in Ohio in your name then take it to your state and reregister it again.

Yes every state is different. I think these are good questions to ask for any state though. I really doubt she will get a title put in her name for a $600 camper when she hasn't by now but yes that would be really nice for me
