Were Shasta’s, specifically 63 Astrodome J rail originalltbpainted or left aluminum? Mine looks like it was originally painted, but not sure if that’s right.

My 57 had painted trim but it will be mill finish now. Painting J rail is difficult to do and it's hard to get enough paint on every surface. I like the plain trim setting off the painted trailer.

Adding to vikx's comment above, once painted jrail can't be removed without destroying the paint job. And paint putty can crack (slightly) when exposed to very cold temps and high temps can cause oozing.
I've painted the rail and polished and both looked great. Both ways need the old paint removed which is a lot of work.
I'm not sure if the jrail was always painted from the Factory.

My '64 Airflyte has original paint on the j-rails, in answer to your question. I have taken some off using a fairly coarse steel wool, but must warn of the impending carpal tunnel that follows. I am planning to someday polish it all and leave it unpainted in it's next lifetime.

My 59 Mercury looked painted and we painted it when we painted the camper. If I had to do it again I think I would either polish it or paint it before installing. I like the sharp shiny lines on some of the other folks campers. I used a spray gun so painting it wasnt to difficult.
