There is a thread in the glamping section about alternative steps, but mine has a step attached. There is a thread in the old forum that addresses this and it seemed that out of those who had a step they were mid 60's. I think mine is a 60 or 61. And I think the step might have been added or the wood it is attached to was replaced. It looks too new and is not creosoted like the other wood. What do you think? It does not say Shasta. Other than a shelf and water heater, there were no improvements or additions to this trailer. image by susieqilvu, on Flickr image by susieqilvu, on Flickr

Lula Belle is a '64. No step. A step would certainly be handy for those 'vertically-challenged' among us. . . .

Hamlet has no step, either.

I found a pic of a Shasta Compact with a step. This is said to be a 64. And I do think mine is original although much earlier than a 64.

These could have been added later or even been an option. Just guessing here but the old compact were very low weren't they? No need of a step unless you put bigger tires on it and maybe jacked it up a bit. Then It would have more of a reason for a step.

I don't see the need for one and with mine. I know that it was lived in for a long period of time. The water heater is was added or replaced and was hard wired, so if it was blocked up at some point, then that would explain the step. I haven't taken the rotten wood off of the curbside yet, so when I get it torn out, I'll have a better idea. I'm not exactly sure what it is bolted to, but I'll be finding out after the holidays if the weather ever gets above freezing. High today was 30! I've compiled a list of things that compare and contrast on the 60-63 Shasta Compact models and hopefully, will post my documented findings in another thread soon. I've become obsessed. There are so few originals left and over 50 years, things are bound to be replaced or removed.

I think there were lots of options from the factory...
The 57 twin 1500s (Sundance and Butch Cassidy) are as alike as two peas in a pod, except one is yellow, the other blue; one has brakes, the other doesn't. Sundance has the grab handle, missing on Butch. No steps.
The 64 SCS has a step but it's twined up, haven't seen it yet. Hope it says Shasta on it.

I am pretty sure they did not make the Compacts with steps, although I have been wrong about factory options before. My '69 has no sign of one, and I believe someone had flipped the axle along the way, it is quite a step height getting up in. Vikx, I am pretty sure you are going to find the script on the SCS step. The ones that have steps without the "Shasta" script on them were very likely added on. All the ones I have seen with the script were welded on, not bolted, so it's pretty easy to tell if there was one removed. The Airflyte I am working on has a step, "Shasta" script and all, and it is a '64. The '71 Starflyte that I got parts from last spring also had the Shasta step. Add-ons are easily available from most RV dealers, and even VTS has them: www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Folding_Step_5_25_Drop_p/vts-693.htm

According to the ORIGINAL first time owner of my 62 Shasta, the step came with it!

Filing this one for future reference, was not aware they offered the option. Makes sense though...
