Hi I am helping a friend re-seal their trailer and suddenly realized that I don’t know how many rolls of itty taps to order for a 15 ft toaster style trailer. As well can someone tell me what width and thickness of putty tape to order for the one inch j-rail? Thanks

I took Mobiltec's advice and went with 1" putty. I took vikx's suggestion and used putty rather than butyl. It's too sticky.
i think I used 5 rolls on our 12' Shasta1500.

I had asked awhile back in the Products and Supplies thread about what thickness of putty tape. Perhaps my question got lost in the shuffle. Is there a general consensus on which thickness and width to use for each application? I.E. a different thickness to put behind windows than one to go under the roof skin fold-over? Or one width to use behind windows, but another for the narrower J-Rail? Or do you each just pick one thickness and width and use it on your whole trailer, doubling thickness or trimming width when necessary?

I’ll buy the one inch wide as suggested. @vikx mobiltec

mobiltec said "Vintage Trailer Gaskets sells 1/2 wide by 1/16 inch thick putty tape just for that purpose. Works great. Apply the tape to the sides every place that the fold over covers and then just proceed as normal using a block and mallet. "
and he also said "I use 1 inch by 1/8 thick for the rest of the trailer and I do two layers for anything on top of the trailer but I still suck the screws all the way down and squeegy out the excess. I just like to be double sure on top."

I know all of this information exists here and there, and I do use the search feature exhaustively, but when you're just searching for "putty" or "butyl" and there are 40+ pages of threads to read through, sometimes it helps to have it all in one concise location rather than to try to find the information spread out over years' worth of threads and comments. As much as I'd love to be able to sit and read and take notes from every post about every subject, my job and side-job and everyday life just doesn't always allow for it.

Yes it is. No reason to pay specialized prices for a common product...

Is 1/16 x 1” putty something usually available locally?

I don't think 1" x 1/16 is available. It would be really floppy... most 1" putty is 1/8 or 3/16.

I also double tape the rear and front windows. With the canned hams, water rolls off the roof to the rear like a waterfall.

I read where someone, I believe Ten, suggested a thinner tape under the door frame? We definitely found spots (like under the fold over) where a thinner tape would have been a better choice. If I was doing it all over - 1" x 1/8" putty under J-Rail, 3/4 x 1/8 is fine for under the windows, and I'd have some 1/16" on hand for tight spots and under the fold. Use the actual really sticky Butyl for under the roof Vent (since we only needed a small piece rather than a whole role we bought it from an RV dealer's service shop). All total we used about 5 1/2 rolls on the Vette. (10 ft.) But we got carried away in some spots and in others it still doesn't look like it's sealed (trying to refrain from packing it in).

I added multiple layers of tape in the dips and valleys of the siding, just to make sure I`d get plenty of squish.
