Ugh...

When I started this project- I did not plan on taking cabinets out, as it just seemed like too much for me to tackle for my first time, with limited space and limited help. So, I cut out soft spots of the front floor ( ie cut out around the kitchen cabintes), put in new frame joists and installed new plywood. Proud of that - as it All looked good. IMG_1827 by kathy, on Flickr IMG_1835 by kathy, on Flickr I went to remove the back floor today-as there were a number of soft spots and plywood missing. Figured I'd take out the Gaucho and install new plywood up to the kitchen cabinets. Ok, I can handle that. IMG_2219 by kathy, on Flickr So, I spent the day cutting carriage bolts, nails, etc to get the floor up. Did better than the front, that's for sure ! In the course of this work- I noted that the the curbside wheel well flange is torn off on the side and back. Anyway to fix without having a new one made? IMG_2224 by kathy, on Flickr I then took a better look inside my cabinets- and noted that the floor in there was really kinda gross- I really would feel better putting all new subfloor in there. UGH. In addition, the street side wheel well is a MESS- bent to pieces, flange torn off, and rusted through in many spots. IMG_2230 by kathy, on Flickr Sooooo....I resigned myself to the fact that the cabinets had to come out. I am kinda down about that- I just am afraid I am ripping so much out that I will never put it back together right. I am taking pictures of EVERYTHING...and videos describing what I am dealing with. I think I need some encouragement...as today really put a cloud over my head. I know that the more you dig, the more you find to fix. Wheel wells are an issue for sure- and now getting cabinets out. I was just so ready to put new plywood in and get onto installing wall panels. Not gonna happen...I know. Taking a breather- sorry to vent....just gonna go have a beer

Sorry about what you found, Kaffi. We've all been there.
I think you need new wheel wells. They can be made at a metal shop. Some trailers have wood wheel wells and they work fine. Coated on the exposed surface and caulked on the seams. I've had two like that but did change one out.
If the floor is gone, you have no choice but to pull the cabinets. Be aware that they are anchored at the top if you haven't taken the ceiling apart yet. A sawzall comes in handy if the nails/screws won't come out.

Don't lose hope or stamina! This is a project, and you wanted it! So now you have it and yes, this is unexpected work (and probably a lil depressing). BUT consider this: you will KNOW this camper. I don't remember if you said you planned to keep forever, but if you are, you'll really know exactly what's in it, you'll get to select flooring and know fo sho what is under it is amazing.
*I did not go into mine with these issues - but I have before, and while in the moment it feels overwhelming, you will come out of it feeling really confident about what you know and what you've done. We're here for some tips and cyberhugyouvegotthis support!

Ok...I am feeling better today. Figured out how to get the lower kitchen cabinets out without too much trouble. Took the flooring out which makes me feel better. IMG_2275 by kathy, on Flickr The wheel well is shot- will start to look for someone who can make me new ones. IMG_2288 by kathy, on Flickr Thanks for the support- one day at a time

I've had two like that but did change one out. Hello A few questions: When I am calling about wheel wells/tubs, how do I describe? What kind of metal/thickness? I have no idea what I am talking about Do you have photos of the wooden ones? That may be an option- and less costly for sure. Plywood perhaps? 1/2"? just exploring options. Install of floor is on hold until I get them...but there's lots else to do for sure! Thanks Vikx

I would say wheel well tubs, the metal the goes around the tire. Take the old tub with and have them look at it. Our metal shop here makes them but wants to copy the old.
I do have pix of the wooden ones but they are not uploaded anywhere. PM or email me for some. They are simple wooden boxes that fit over the wheel hole. Mine were mounted on top of the floor and I believe they were 1/2" ply. Make that 5/8 nowadays because they cheat you a 32nd... I went thru absolute h*ll with the Hanson, it was my first frame up build and being a 52, EVERYTHING was done differently. Even the wiring was knob and tube...

I just took mine around to a few metal shops so they could actually see it. I would definitively get more than one quote as one place quoted me over double the amount as another.

In case you are wondering, now you know what happens if you have a blow out on a tire. It ruins the wheel wells and sometimes can actually ruin some of the outside metal on the side of the trailer. This is why I stress that you should ALWAYS have good tires on your trailer.

And should ALWAYS have strong wheel wells... My cousin's fiver had the tread come off of both tires (tandem on one side). Took me two days to repair the mess. Odd, the tires still had air, but boy, did that tread do a number on the wheel wells, tubs and interior. A fun repair, none the less.

Happy to report that I found a small local metal shop that can do my wheel wells and when I was there I saw this: break by kathy, on Flickr I think I impressed them as I knew what it was from watching Mobiltec's videos! I then asked if they can fabricate aluminum skins for a camper with a 6" break and Pittsburg seam- they said yes! Even showed me the machine they have that makes that seam. I have not even begun to figure out which ones I need to replace...but I know that a few are pretty bad. So happy that at least I know I have a source near me that can help out when the time comes !

Oh dang that is great luck Kaffi. What a nice looking hand brake tool... I have access to one here for free but I would really like my own some day.
