So it's been almost two weeks since we put our '67 Cardinal Flipper in the driveway. Did I mention we did Every. Single. THING wrong one can do when buying a vintage canned ham? That's another thread... I am dying to start poking around, but I do NOT want to start taking out rivets and screws at lightening speed, find out I've got a frame about as rotted as the ark Noah built, and then be left figuring out how to put it back together until I've got a more solid game plan so its not sitting in my tiny driveway like the remnants of a tornado. I was thinking this: removing the windows, and lifting the skin off the front as sort of a preliminary look-see. Most of the entire trailer is made up of these screws (is 'rivets' proper terminology?)
And I just happen to have a 1/4" socket drive that fits. I tested one.
Just curious to know what things I should keep in mind, by on the lookout for, and be watchful of in these first stages of this journey. Especially being a newbie. Many thanks!

You're doing the right thing. Remove the windows, lift the lower skins just to take a look or go ahead and remove the lower skins all the way. What you really want to do is remove ALL of the metal skin. You're going to find out it's really pretty easy. Just a little time consuming but easy. Then you will know 90% of what you need to know about your trailer and the work ahead of you. You will be able to make lots of decisions once all the metal skin is off. Are you working indoors? Because if not then perhaps working in sections would be better because of weather.

I'm outdoors, Larry, but under a sort of car port. Space is tight on the sides but she's light enough to push-pull into more space and room on the driveway. I'ma lift the lower skins then. I know at least one side is really bad (hence the seller keeping that side flush up against a retaining wall when I went to see it!).
I think I'll work in sections, take lots of photos, and put it back together while I plan my attack on the frame.

The window screws are hex head and original to Cardinals of that era. The line of body screws isn't original from what I can see. Be interesting to see what you find.

Oh wow....that looks like someone reached up and cut off the part that was crumbling away. And then went on with life.

What a mess. Hang in there, ANYTHING is fixable...
Make SURE you straighten the metal edge bend before lifting the skins. They will split if the bend is put in a bind. Learned that the hard way.

If you are not scared to death by your own story. you might enjoy the story about my 49 Silver Lodger Go to www.Silverlodger.com. Push the word at the top menu for The silver lodger. My new silver streak will open first. IT's worth a look too but, The start of the lodger story is a bit more entertaining though. Hang in there, good luck. Wayne
