I've never bought a trailer off Craigs List or Ebay. Never even looked in a news paper for one. I find mine in back yards, out in the deserts and mountains and sometimes people inform me about them after seeing one and thinking about me. That's not to say that I don't follow all these mediums just to keep up on what's hot and what's not.
As most of you now know I found my 54 Westerner out in Panamint Valley just down the road from Barker's Camp which is the site that Charles Manson was captured. In this video you see me stumble across a 51 Royal Spartanette that has lots good parts still and is actually restorable if it was legal to get it off the Mojave Preserve... Which it isn't ....
This is one of my "Exploring" videos. I love exploring these old mining camps.

Very cool. Vintage trailer find and many exploring possibilities. I repeat, very cool.

My friends laughed at me on the way to get mine because every farm and barn and field that we passed, I visually scoped it out. They said, "Yeah, she's got the camper bug."
I did buy mine on an auction but only because it was something I REALLY, really, ReAlLy, wanted and I didn't want to take a chance on letting it pass me by and it was within proximity.
You have a really cool camper story and obviously some really great camper finding experiences. We spent several weeks out West recently, camping and fell in love with the freedom to explore. I can't wait to go back. The further East you go, the more "freedom to explore" you lose. Who knows, maybe next time Susie will be following me.

Remember that I said I DO keep up with all the mediums. Just haven't found anything for sale in the price range that I like to keep within. And it's getting harder all the time to find them. I did find one 64 Shasta for free on Craigs List and I was on it in a heartbeat. I was the first caller and my friend Cindy was emailing the owner at the same time I was talking to her on the phone. We both ended up going out there and picking up the trailer and became sort of partners on it. Through some trading I ended up with my Kenskill and Cindy ended up with the Shasta. I put the floor in that Shasta and used it for the flooring videos. Funny how things come together.
So there is nothing wrong with finding your dream on CL or EB or any other way. As the video says, "Vintage Trailers Are Where You Find Them". The "Hunt" is part of the fun I think.
There are a lot more auctions going on these days then I ever remember and older trailers were used for years as security trailers on construction sites. Also the storage yards will pop up with an auction now and again with an abandoned vintage trailer, and they can go for as little as $10 if no one else bids on them. People who usually show up for auctions are not looking for projects. They are looking to flip and the newer trailers are usually easier in their minds to deal with where as the old ones just look like too much work to the average person. So Auctions are another real good choice to look into. The general public is welcome in most cases.
The county auctions off all kinds of stuff sometimes 4 or more times a year depending on how active your area is. Vintage cars and trailers and all kinds of other stuff shows up from drug busts and estates that have no beneficiaries ect.....

As with many things in my life, when something grabs my attention I tend to go whole hog into it thinking I've found something I can "play" with only to find that I've jumped into something that has just caught fire and is the latest fad. Vintage trailers seem to be the current fad whether it be for the vintage car rallies that now pull them behind for extra points or the Glampers or just folks hoping to make a few quick bucks quickly. I hope I'm wrong and it's only because I'm now looking that I notice it more (much like buying a new car and then noticing the same one and color a million times on the road) but these little darlings do seem to be THE thing to have now. I still have faith that there are many remaining in the backwoods, old barns, dilapidated buildings, and hunters' fields for me though. As George Michael used to sing -- Gotta have faith!

I had no idea they were such a hot thing. Then when I posted on FB that I had gotten one, one of my friends informed me she bought one (restored) back in May. I was surprised. She's here somewhere. And hers just looks pretty in her yard and serves as a girl cave. I thought most people just thought I was a little crazy with my love for little trailers.

Oh... those that are not "in" yet do think you're a little crazy. If not a lot! At least my neighbors do for sure.

One of my neighbors stopped by at 8am this morning to look at mine. He thought it was cool, and he wants one!! But my other neighbors aren't going to feel like that. He has a classic car, so he "get" it. I'm surrounded by Stepford Wives here. Seriously thinking my next step should be to buy some secluded property. I wanted a mountain cabin but I'd be OK with a mountain camper.

Ann do you have enough room on one of your properties for a vintage trailer rally or gathering?

Uh... Having never been to a rally I don't know. How much room do you need? Maybe. Mostly wooded three acre lots with a cabin on each. If not, George Washington National Forest and Bryce Ski Resort are relatively nearby.

The rallies in your area are most likely finished for the year but try to look up a few for next spring and summer. Go to one or two and you will get the idea. Kinda like a car show but you camp out there.

Sound great to me. I'm sure the number of trailers showing up is dependent on where and when the rallies are being held, yes? Is there a particular site you use to follow where they're being held? I know the Sisters on the Fly have broken their group into regions and, if a member, you're notified by Meet Up type announcements on their events. Something like that. Or can I just "assume" that someone on this forum will hear/know and post for the masses. I like that idea myself.

Just start searching your area when winter is about over. Where are you again? I'm sorry to say I forgot.

Will do. I actually reside in Fredericksburg, VA but own cabins spitting distance to West Virginia -- between Mount Jackson, VA and Basye or Orkney Springs, VA. The Shasta is currently being worked in Columbia Furnace (small cow town in VA) and the Travelmaster is located at one of the cabins.
