Here is the short and to the point answer. To us in the hobby, any trailer that was built during the "Mid-Century Modern" era is a vintage trailer. It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with an ERA.... The era I speak of is the mid-century modern era. And that happened during the 40s, 50s and 60s. Anything else is just old and not what we in the hobby call "vintage". And it really started in 1950.... But we include the 40s and 60s in this definition.
Simple really...

I don't think it matters if it's "vintage" or not. It's all what you like. I like the late 60s and early 70s trailers like the 66 super shasta you did in your videos. The canned hams are cool but really not my thing. I love to see them restored but I like something I can actually stand up in. I even like some from the 80s and I love old slide in truck campers. One of those might be my next project.

I only decided to talk about this because many people are buying 80s trailers and calling them vintage just because they are old LOL... You are right. To each their own. But if we are talking vintage, we are talking mid-century modern. That's an era.

I like Your way of thinking on this matter mobiltech. I`m early fifties so i too must be vintage. LOL I love old slide in truck campers. One of those might be my next project. I have a 8` setting in the yard. Not an overhead. That is next on My agenda of campers. I have rounded up a camper furnace and a gas lamp for it. I`ll find a 3 burner stove top and install it too. Make it nice and cozy.

I understand the sentiment, and am not really interested in the 80s trailers I see on Facebook, but we still need to help our fellow travelers when we see things that are not safe. To me, rescuing anything from the dump is more important than breaking people down into categories...there isn't much left from the 80s after all and those may end up more valuable simply because they were so disposable.

To me, "vintage" is a camper that miraculously survived long enough to remind people of simpler (better) times. Back when we would sit by a fire, out under the stars, with people we love talking and laughing. Back before cell phones, Facebook and satellite TV dishes.
I wonder if people are drawn to our campers because they want, even for a few minutes, to go back in time to happier days.
Albert Einstein said "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots."

Thanks NC...I'm with you. When I have a particularly difficult day, I sometimes just go sit in the camper (from 1965) and think about how things were back then when it was built. Not the best of times, but some aspects were pretty good. I don't much care for all the electronic devices that seem to remove us from living in the moment. Most evenings I sit outside, watching and listening to the transition from daytime to nighttime at dusk. Birds stop singing, bats come out, and it suddenly becomes very quiet. Not sure which is best dawn or dusk?

I LOVE VINTAGE TRAILERS. Of course. To me, a real 50s ham is about as vintage as you can get. Other than Ginger's future Aero Flite... yum on that one.
That said, VTT was born to help ALL trailer lovers, regardless of the year. Yes, some are just old ugly trailers, but if a person wants to rebuild it, more power to 'em and we are here to help. Stick and tin trailers have been built the same way for years. One of my "newer" trailers was a 67 Land Commander. That thing taught me more in 6 months than I learned the previous 3 years...
I wouldn't call an 80s anything vintage, but they are welcome here. And after we educate the owner, he or she may turn up with a very cool relic to drool over.
Our only restriction here on the board is motor home running gear and engines, only the camper part is kosher. Oh, and NO SALES on the board. We're not here to promote flippers and junk trailers being sold for WAY too much..

It seems that some of you took my post wrong. I don't mean to put down any campers just because I don't consider them vintage. Not at all. I have owned a camper as new as 2001. And it was a huge 33 foot Coachmen. I was just airing my thoughts on what I consider a "vintage" camper to be. People are always emailing me about their 70s and 80s campers and they are calling them vintage and I just don't see it that way. So like I said, to each their own and I don't put anyone down for that. I just don't look at 70s and 80s as being vintage that's all.

... to each their own and I don't put anyone down for that. I just don't look at 70s and 80s as being vintage that's all. This is a great thread. Very thought provoking. There will be a time when parachute pants, suits with padded shoulders, synthesized music, and campers with flake-board cabinets of the 1980s & 90s will all be the coolest thing. But not to me. On a practical note, this may not be the best place to get advice on a post 1980 camper. Most of us have no experience with that type of camper. On a personal note, 1955-64 is my favorite time for vintage campers. Ham shaped, amber woodwork, wood framing, and small. It confuses me when I do a "vintage camper for sale" search on searchtempest and 1990s campers pop up. Twenty five years old may be vintage to some people, but to me they are just old.

Some people take the word vintage just so they can up the price. I just laugh when I watch Barrett Jackson and someone pays 3 million for a 70s hemi cuda and anybody that knows anything knows that hemis were crap from the get go but to each their own. If you're happy with it then have at it.

Something with an engine is a lot of trouble and up keep if you only drive it twice a year.

I'm in love with the idea of a motor home. And if it was a vintage motor home it would just be the bees knees. The cat's pajamas. Cool beans... I'm thinking of doing a country wide excursion to meet up with other vintage trailer folks and all of my viewers. Wouldn't it be cool to do it in an old Winnie? (notice I said old and not vintage)

Well, there's a ton of old gassers buried in the woods and fields... not very good mileage. LOL. Just be careful if you get a Winnie, it's not made of FOAM.

I personally wouldn't want a motorized Winnie from the 80's but when I see one come through my town headed for the state park, I become a rubber-necker, and think, they are pretty cool to have taken that thing and made it into a family camp-mobile AND they don't care if it is ugly or not, they are out having an adventure!
