I had planed on having duel brake/running/turn signal lights on each side on the back. But then, I noticed on trucks that they have one brake/running/turn light and one backup light on each side. I thought that might be handy to have bright backup lights. Thoughts.............. IMG_20170709_104617588 by KamHawk, on Flickr

I saw a photo of a shasta like that, it looked pretty decent. I was going to link the photo I saw, but it looks like photobucket ate it.

Do you plan to do a lot of driving at night? Personally, I try to plan my trips so I don't drive after dark at all.

Do you plan to do a lot of driving at night? Personally, I try to plan my trips so I don't drive after dark at all. I like to know that my equipment is set up so that I can, and do so safely. Obviously lighting is important, and in NY, subject to vehicle inspection. I am not crazy about after-dark, but am working nights on the highways and see lots o' crazies. I like the idea of the double-dual lights, the more lighting and safety built in, the better. If you are not a purist looking for strictly original, it is a great idea to add some extras.

RinTin, I don't plan on driving at night much, but it does seem that we always end up getting home late. Or, we leave later than planed and arrive at our destination late. I thought backing into a spot might be easier with added light. On the other hand I like the safety factor of the dual break lights. Nccamper, this was a total rebuild from frame up. I brought the trailer in the garage with just the frame and built it up from there. From this angle it looks as if there is no way it will go back out the door, but it should (fingers crossed) I have about 2" of clearance as it sits. If I need more, I can reduce the tire pressure. Last resort, I will remove the tires and put small rollers on the axle drag it out.

I've rolled in to the driveway after dark after pushing that last leg home a few times too. I'm not suggesting extra lighting is a bad idea, not at all. It's just that many times people become enamored and go way overboard with add-ons without giving much thought to the practical use.

I guess that is why I am asking for opinions. This is a 75 Scotty (and some would say borderline vintage), So it is not original. I love the look of the birch and add newer amenities. The brake lights that where on it just didn't seem to have the look I was going for and I had seen some older trailer with dual lights. The backup lights are a bit of a afterthought and I'm wondering how useful they might be. I know they would help for backing at night, but might they help during the day so people can see you are backing as well? Just a thought.

I have thought backup lights would be useful, for visibility and for warning. I am not sure how handy it would be to wire them up, if your seven-way wiring is already at capacity. I thought about using tractor lights or fog lights, mounted underneath where they wouldn't show, wiring to the marker light circuit, with a toggle switch on the tongue. They would not always be on when in reverse, but would be available to use in the dark.

That's the next step.....figure out the seven-way wiring. I've done four-way (flat plug), but never seven. I just need to get my head wrapped around the layout of everything

Don't mix the 4 way and 7 way color code up! It can be a real pain...

That is CORRECT!
The difference in the 4 and 7 way code is the problem:
RT: 4 way is Green. 7 way is Brown. LT: 4 way is Yellow. 7 way is Red. TM: 4 way is Brown. 7 way is Green.
You can see how messed up things can be...
I often use the 4 way ribbon with the 7 way code. Yellow marries to Red for the LT.
By the way, Black is usually the Hot charge line for the battery. 7 way Yellow (middle post) is aux, often back up-lights in a modern RV.
