I've lost my ever-loving mind! I'm Tasha- total newbie- got a 15ft '58 Oasis dropped in my lap (free) three days ago. So, no choice on choosing something that wasn't in deplorable shape. It's been sitting for at least 27 years and was used as a dump for all things nasty. It's being held together with mouse poop right now. Positives, aside from one bad patch on the lower front, the skin is in good condition, as are the windows and the door and it has cute turquoise appliances and the vintage table top is in decent shape. I have ALL the tools and know how to use them and I'm pretty stubborn- so the hard work and challenges aren't the problem, lack of knowledge is. The cons- it's frame has disintegrated- particularly in the back and front- like nothing left of the horizontal supports below both windows but dirt. Based on a great FB group on restoring vintage trailers, they directed me here. I immediately read the ALL NEWBIES section and know I'm already in trouble, having cleaned out those rotted supports in the front and back. I at least had the foresight to stop before I got any farther and do some research so I haven't touched the side walls (but the frame around the door has crumbled). I've watched Jennies Garage of a restoration of a Shasta and now have all the Mobiletec videos queued up to watch. I've already learned so much and now know that I can't do anything less than take it down to the metal chassis. Here are the sad before photos. 20170506_141117 (2) by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 20170505_134151 by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 20170506_151737 by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 20170506_151742 by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 20170506_163044 by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 20170506_163027 by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr 18320423_825690280920114_6079641539823025837_o by Tasha Townsend, on Flickr

Welcome!
Move slowly and ask a lot of questions as you go. It will be beautiful when it's finished. Oasis campers have great cabinets.

Welcome to VTT Tasha. Unlike most things you buy today, these old trailers can be completely rebuilt if needed. Go for it.

Welcome to the forum Tasha. "I'm already in trouble" but it is a "Good Kind of Trouble". Not like the trouble I used to get into. LOL You will have a lot of fun restoring Your camper, You already have 2/3rds of the battle won. The camper and the willingness to go forward with repairing it the right way. Have fun and enjoy.

Congrats! You will have a gorgeous camper when you're done. Save all the pieces until you are absolutely sure you don't need them any more. Save days when you're too tired, too sick, or the weather's too bad to work on it for planning the colors, fabrics, accessories. That got us through a few long winter days and times where we were just tired of the mess and the (seemingly) slow progress. And remember, we here at VTT are a bunch of trailer voyeurs. Pictures, pictures, pictures!

……..I can't do anything less than take it down to the metal chassis. Here are the sad before photos. One comment regarding the condition of this puppy: OMG!!! With that said (not to be discouraging or anything), what I'm glad you're able to see, along with the supportive and knowing eyes of all of our VTT brethren here, is that this decaying heap represents most of what you need to have a beautiful, functioning and safe 50's vintage trailer. Looking forward to the next set of pictures! That front window is amazing… is that one piece of glass??

Yes that front window is all one piece- the windows are the only things in good shape.

So I'm trying to define my action plan. First I'm going to take a WHOLE bunch of pics, draw a diagram and take a bunch of measurements. When I'm ready to go hands on, I'm thinking: 1) windows and door removed 2) skin off, setting these pieces carefully aside 3) brace the two side walls and remove the front and back. right now they are partially dismantled so it seems like a good place to start.
Is this the proper start?

Is this the proper start? To My untrained ear, that sounds about right. Is what I did before doing any measuring was to get the trailer frame level. Front to back and side to side. That way, if You have to use a level to measure something where there is no reference, other than a window opening or door opening, the measurements will be accurate upon the remeasure when the walls are completed.

Welcome! And I hope I get to meet you and your trailer some day. Yours will probably be finished before mine. We will be at the Play the Gap rally next Sunday (5-21-17) in Union Gap WA. Nothing gets you going like going to a rally. It gets you all pumped up about getting home and getting started.

I haven't even touched my trailer yet, still researching and learning so no way will I be finished before you. If you click on a members name it takes you to their profile. If they filled it out. I am working on a master bedroom remodel, adding an outside awning with a walk-in closet under it and a family room remodel adding a 4' x 12' bay window and working on 2 of the 3 trailers I have. So have been a little busy.

Please don't post your locations on the board. It isn't safe.
