While getting ready to remove the old black tank in my trailer, it suddenly occurred to me that there is no vent stack running anywhere in the bathroom, and there was nothing protruding from the roof. Am I missing something here? Should I add a vent when I install the new tank? There was a hole in the wall next to the toilet with a vent cover on the exterior. (see photos below. It has a piece of fabric stuck in it) but nothing was connected to it from the tank. Also, the sink will go in on the opposite side of the trailer. No vent there either. My husband says to ask if I can add a cheater vent to the sink.. I'm thinking it's just dish water. Does the sink vent really need to go through the roof? The new tank,is (photo #4) Photo #1 Hole in wall, next to toilet. it includes a spot to add a vent I believe. Exterior of hole in bathroom. Vent cover for hole in bathroom New septic tank SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave

Vents can go thru the roof, but they are better out the side. (less leaks that way) The sink can have a cheater, yes. Black tank should be a "real" vent because of the odors...

So can I bring the new vent up out of the tank and through that existing vent hole in the side of my trailer? That would be the simplest solution. So do you think the old tank was unvented? Or just vented into the air under the trailer? SaveSave

Not sure on the old tank. I think you can vent out the side. Be sure to consult a plumbing person on pipe size and type of ell you might need. I'm thinking a sweep rather than a 90* ell...

Consider that you would have odors at the point of venting, which is why most go through the roof. Venting also can flow tighter than waste delivery so a sweep ell is not necessary but can certainly be used if space required it. If the tank is properly vented, I am not sure that you need a separate vent for the sink drain regardless of its location. A separate sink vent won't hurt, but may not be necessary. I gotta say I have not encountered a toilet vent run from the fixture itself before. This is a new one on me.

At first I thought it was just for air flow, like the vent over my stove, but then realized that there had been a pipe leading out there at some point and it had to come out of the side of the toilet as there is no home in the floor leading to a tank. They also sell it on amazon.com although it comes from Canada, but it might be cheaper to order from amazon and no duty.
