I believe an invertor takes 12 volts and increases it to 120 volts AC. I have something similar that was in My camper. That power supply converts 120 volts AC to 12 volts DC. I see where the without charger has a check mark in the box, I do not believe that convertor was made for charging and maintaining the battery. I think it is just for powering the interior lights and any other 12 volt appliances. The with amp battery charger does not have a check mark, if it did it would appear to have the amp rating listed there too. The convertor that was in My camper is rated at 5 amps charging rate and the online manual for it shows it can be hooked to the battery and it will recharge the battery while plugged into 120 volts. The one in the add shows a battery in and a battery out so I dont know what that would be for if it did not maintain the battery while plugged in. There may be someone that has a similar unit that could explain its features and functions more clearly.

It's a converter and old. It's not worth messing with. New converters have "smart" chargers to protect and maintain the battery. The old ones simply charged all the time and often boiled the batteries dry. Check out Progressive Dynamics or IOTA
CONverter: converts 110 AC to 12 volts DC.
INverter: inverts 12 volts DC to 110 AC. It takes a large battery BANK to support an inverter. They are very draining to the batteries.

Thanks for explaining it. I didn't really think it would be a keeper but I was curious as to what it is

Well, I was going to install the old Progressive Dynamics{I could not remember the name yesterday}into My camper, perhaps now, I will not. I remember the days of the vehicular generators and voltage regulators. It was a constant chore refilling the battery due to them getting boiled dry. LOL Thank You vikx for explaining the function and for the reminder. It has kept Me from making another goof up. LOL

Not a thing wrong with the *new* converters. Progressive Dynamics makes good ones these days...

When I was looking for info on My old convertor, I found the PD website and was surprised that they are still in business and, they do have the schematics and owners manual for the old units. I will be checking into their convertors and probably get one of the new units. It doesn`t seem that this company is going to be going out very soon so getting service for their products should be no problem.

Just be sure you get a "smart" charging system with the PD. Some of them lack that and/or offer the smart charge as a separate item...
