If I bought one of those for Sam I would expect him to get good enough at carpentry that he can build me new kitchen cabinets, table, dresser, patio furniture..............................

I've actually upped my woodworking game since buying a pocket hole jig. It's not fine woodworking, but steps, stools, cabinets, racks, etc can all be made very quickly with pocket holes. It's also really the easiest way to replace trailer framing and build new interior cabinets. You can do everything with the cheaper unit, or the harbor freight jig as well. www.amazon.com/Kreg-R3-Pocket-Hole-System/dp/B000J43A7W

After all this time it still works perfectly. Way back when I bought mine it was about $60 at HF.
