mocking the J~Rail to the camper. It would be easier, I think, with two people, but two peoples not available. I`ll install a few screws and straighten it as I go, Then it`ll be time for the sticky putty tape. IMG_3154 by Martin Draper, on Flickr

I like the quality of Your tutorials, thank You for taking the time to make and post those videos. I was real close. Mocked the J~Rail without the tape. I`ll move the rail down and in just a little. The one side is ready for the tape job. The tape that I am using looks to be the same color, but the paper is smooth and shiny. do they make putty with smooth tape ? I do have some putty with the crinkle paper on it, it is fairly dry and not much stickum left.

When it's warm it tends to stick better and squishes down better as you screw the jrail in. I've never seen it with smooth paper though.

Heaven forbid of it touches back onto itself. A real bear to get separated, usually just start all over again. LOL The crinkly papered stuff doesnt want to squish very good. It was in a package and I think it had been on the shelf for too long. I should go back and see if they have some that is more fresh. I like the way You are able to bend the crinkly papered tape around the curves, this smooth stuff does not bend except for by tearing the paper.

OH NOOOoooooo, I did an innernet search. turns out this stuff is butyl. The one sales person at the lumber store assured Me that it was putty tape. Too late now, everything else is sealed down with the stuff. Wish Me well if I ever have to remove it. link

It's really too bad that sales clerks these days no nothing about the products they handle. Unless you called it Butyl Tape. Then you got what you asked for. Don't use any more of it.

And, again, I thank You very much mobiltech for Your knowledge and information. I did ask specifically for Putty tape. I just did not know that putty tape all came on a crinkly paper roll. I now know and will not make that mistake again. I have four rolls of the butyl tape to haul back. :bangsheadonbrickwall: I have all the windows and the eyebrows installed with that butyl tape, I wonder if it would be a good idea to remove them and re~Do with putty tape ? Before that butyl tape gets stuck on permanent like. I do have those two rolls of crinkle paper putty tape setting on the shelf. i gave them another once over but they are just too hard and absolutely no sticky left to them. I didn`t unwrap the one roll, give it a squeeze and it is as solid as the opened roll. I`ll go back through the threads and see where it was that one of the members recommended a good seller of the putty tape.

OH well, i got another job that came in this evening, I`m not liking it very much but it will help Me to buy some more supplies for the camper and it`ll be several days before the putty tape gets here. Going to be sealing leaks, overhauling the carb and a tune up on a 84 Ford pigup, I don`t much care for working on Fords, at least this one is a six cylinder so that helps some. I like the 300 six, I just do not care much for the chassis and electronics from Ford. Oh well, every dollar helps. LOL

I finally solved the problem and now own one of each.

In Your opinion, do You think I should remove the door and windows, the eyebrows and remove the butyl from them and go back on with the putty tape ? Now that is funny. LOL I have worked on them both, Chevys are easy compared to Fords. That is just My opinion though. LOL

Butyl tape comes in handy for all sorts of things. I'd keep it. It doesn't go bad, so no worries there...
I use butyl in areas particularly prone to leak; L trim is one example. Tacky tape (1/2 x 1/16) is great for door and cargo trim. Also, you can stretch butyl a lot thinner to fit almost any application.

Great answer Vikx. I've never used the stuff before so I'm glad that I know there are uses for it.
