I remember my grandfather putting up the awning using springs between the ropes and the stakes...is that an 'old school' kinda thing? I don't see anyone using them anymore...I was just wondering if I should use them?

I use them all the time. Purchased mine from a vendor at pismo last year; used them this year when we had some high winds. They keep the lines in tension without the severe wind pulling out the stakes.

We use a pulley and spring on the tie down lines on the end poles. We camp in severe rain and wind storms and it works well.

I am loving this idea! Seems like it would take a lot of stress off the fabric and transfer it to the "shocks". Neat idea. Can't wait to try it this weekend!

When I was a kid my dad used rubber rings cut out of inner tubes for the same purpose, springs are much better because the sun doesn't destroy them. Another thing we have always used was stakes made from 1/2 steel rod that we welded one link from a 5/16 chain on. They are about 18" long with a point on one end and can be drove in deep enough to hold in most any wind if drove in at an angle yet can be pulled out in usable condition.

Our parents were much more resourceful than we are. No camping world or internet back then! I really like the idea of the chain link on the stake.
