Today I started scraping off the residue of the tar on my trailer roof. I had it down to 1/8 inch with my multi tool but did not want to go further than that. So I went to Home Depot and bought acetone, methyl hydrate, and paint thinner. I didn't want to use gasoline due to the smell in the shared garage space I am using. An hour later I was making very small progress. It was coming off with tons of elbow grease.
Then I had an epiphany ... I remembered all my artificial nails falling off when I got baby oil on them. So I thought "why not try it?". Well I almost fell off the ladder when I squirted it on the first patch of tar and it came right off! Just like peeling off a layer of butter! And only $1.00 per bottle at the dollar store!
Maybe I can repackage it and sell it to the Facebook Glampers!
Anyway... Try it yourself and see!

Wow I see another business popping up "Miracle Roof Cleaner Products" cleaner guaranteed to make your trailer look better and smell like the baby it is, only $25.00 a pint.

Baby oil is just scented mineral oil. I wonder if the dollar store would have more of that for a dollar? Of course then you wouldn't have the best smelling trailer in town!

That's just amazing. But this is how we find out what works and what doesn't.... Great tip!

The oil wouldn't evaporate as fast so it might be much better on roof products that are soluble by mineral products, but it will also leave a film that will interfere with paint bonding so area would need to be cleaned with a good solvent to remove the oil. Which would be easy compared to scraping off the roof gunk. I haven't tried it yet but it sounds like it would work.

I am thinking I will clean the roof with paint thinner and sand before we paint it.. Im hoping that will take the oil off. That was my only hesitation when I saw it was working... SaveSave

Awesome advice! I am trying it on the residue I have left from the heat gun scraping and I will report back!

Well, it might help to make big gobs softer to remove, but residue just smears around and then you have oil everywhere, too. So, it won't work for the thinner residue that is left over after you pop the gob off.

But then perhaps your goop is a different composition than the roofing tar I took off...

Haven't tried razor blade, will though, and yeah, who knows what half the slop is up there! Replaced the roof, and we still have mountains of gobby blobs to remove.
