I just had to do the double words, it made me giggle. Now to be serious. Today no real work was done on Lil Bit, but we did come up with some questions. The first being, what wood was used in her originally. Silly me just naturally assumed it was birch because everyone else is using birch. But I got a better look at the paneling today and also saw some that hadn't been stained and I'm wondering if it is pine instead? It only matters because of the cabinet doors and trim pieces going across the seams. The trim is very fancy (see below) and I want to keep it, the doors I would at least like to look close to the new paneling (which we have purchased and it is birch now). So I'm thinking if it is pine then we will definitely replace all the doors and drawer fronts so we can match them better, but I want to keep the trim and need about 4 new pieces created (hoping to find someone around here who will do that) . So I'm turning to you wise people and hoping someone can get me closer to the wood species. Close up of stained paneling to show grain Another section of stained Unstained section Same section from different direction The trim I really like and want to keep

It looks like Douglas Fir to me. Douglas Fir was used alot, for core cabinet building in Avion's, Airstream's, Shasta's, Scotty's, etc. These are the only vintage trailers I have worked on and seen Douglas Fir used for the interior construction, with oak or birch veneer used for the faces.

My cabinets look exactly like that and many have told me it's ash. There is another member here who has an interior made of fir and the grain is both wider and more loosely spaced.

I love that grain! I have no clue what kind of wood my camper was made of, but I've been told it's fir and it doesn't look a lot like that. I don't have very good photos on my phone but this should give you an idea

Yours was the fir I was trying to remember windborn. I was wondering what some oxalic acid wood bleach, followed by shellac might do to even out your grain?

Well Windborn, the grain in our paneling isn't as large as yours, it does look more like Dan's, so I'm assuming it's ash also. I'll tell the carpenter when we talk again so he can calculate that in his quote. I hope he takes the Jubilee and is decently priced because nobody else seems as interested in doing it so far. I guess there's enough other work for the finish carpenters around here that they don't need my piddling little job, so many have been very short with my explanations and just say to email the pictures and they'll get back with me. I don't like that attitude. I might talk too much, but I'm excited about my trailer and expect at least some politeness.
Sorry, just got off the phone with a guy that called me back and he was a bit short with me. Probably wanted to finish up and join his family or something and I took it wrong.
Thanks for the help again, you guys are great.

Maybe next time I've learned to live with it and I've got all my skins on now. It really doesn't look too bad as is. Definitely not a museum piece though. Good luck, msgoehring.

I am very familiar with doug fir, which msgoeehring's definitely is not. As others have suggested, it is likely ash.
Mobiltec substituted white oak for ash recently and was happy with the results, so you have options if ash is not available to you.
Be sure to get either "rotary" or "natural" veneer faced plywood, as "plain slice", "quarter sliced" or "rift cut" veneer faces will look very different than the wood grain pictured.

Wow rintin (Greg?) You had me on a search there. I just spent the past hour and a half or so looking up those words (rotary" or "natural" and "plain slice", "quarter sliced" or "rift cut"). Finally figured out they are different ways the veneer is sliced off the log. I didn't take any of this into account when thinking about buying paneling. I think we are going to stick with birch, which I've already located and priced. The moulding will definitely be different colors and grain, but after taking about it we think it will add a bit more uniqueness and character to Lil Bit. Is it correct for a true restoration? No, but then again neither is using wallpaper as our counter and table, or the cool winged marker light covers we just got. At least we aren't painting it inside, hanging crystal chandeliers and other bric a brac and calling it a vintage trailer. Lol

I wound up using several different wood grains in my camper (old fir, new birch with several grain patterns, poplar and pine trim) and I actually like it! I agree that it adds a little character and it makes everything seem a tad less "precious."
