Something I just learned THE HARD WAY AGAIN.... Porta-Cable staples are the ONLY ones that will penetrate the metal skin. Especially when it is doubled up like with the fold overs for the roof. I tried everything else and it's all junk and will just crumple up under the gun. Home Depot used to sell Porta-Cable staples but now they are carrying Dewalt instead and they are junk. They are flat, not sharp on the ends like Porta-Cable. I also tried Hitachi and they don't work either even though they seem to be sharp.
I can only find Porta-Cable on Amazon now so I'm going to order a crapload of them before Porta-Cable goes out of business or something.

Oh interesting. I might need to make an order tonight. Thanks for the heads up Home depot did the same thing with Robert's Unison Underlayment that I use for Vapor Barrier. Found that on Amazon also and for MUCH cheaper. Paid $17 a roll last time. HD is charging $25 per roll for crap. They didn't even make it right. They have the sticky tape on the wrong edge. It makes no sense at all. I'm finding more and more of the stuff I like on Amazon and less at Home Depot and Lowes. Even Ace Hardware is selling crap now.

I'm starting to hate that store. HD third rate products are wasting a lot of my time because I have to redo things. What length staple did you use on the thicker skin? My theory is the longer the staple, the better the grip, but the more chance of it not sinking in perfectly.

I drove all the way to Lowes and their Hitachi staples just crumpled up also. The Porta-Cable staples work fine but I ran out. So I went to half inch because I had them. But I prefer 3/4 inch. I've ordered 10,000 staples on line from Amazon.

I also was looking for staples and found the Porta Cable on Amazon, multi-size pack, galvanized. I have a 18 Gauge stapler that can handle 5/8 to 1-1/2 inch 1/4 crown staples - does anyone know if galvanized ok to use on the aluminum?

Thanks y'all. I ended up getting the HF ones because I don't know that we'll ever use them again. I've only had them two days but they've already saved our project from falling apart and saved us a day of work. So I think the moral of the story is a higher-quality compressor / staple gun is better than HF, but any air stapler is better than none! I believe you got it! Harbor freight tools work great for the do it yourselfer that only uses them in a non production situation doing medium duty work. As I said above I have all types of tools some expensive, some not so and I have found a cheap hammer will drive a nail better than a rock. What was that famous proverb "Better to have cheap tool than no tool."

I especially like the descent tools, that do a very specific job, that I don't use that much. Those are the ones that I can't afford/justify buying the $$ brand tool. Having said that, I tried out their 18ga nailer as my first "nail gun" I have drive 1000's of porter cable crown staples with it and I can't remember one ever misfiring (unless I hit a screw or a knot). Good stuff.

Good stuff. With some of the electric and pneumatic tools that HF sells, the main reason the tools fail is because the operator does not read the instructions on the proper care and handling of the tool. For instance. The Multi-Tool WILL FAIL very soon if you don't use a wrench on the shaft along with the allen wrench to change the blades. If you tighten down the bolt that holds the blade in without supporting the shaft with another wrench, you will break all the little gears inside that make it oscillate. So read the instructions and everything should be OK. Also using other than Porter-Cable staples will cause problems with the staple guns too. Ask me how I know that.

So far my DeWalt staples are working ok to secure skins, even on the fold...I was going to buy your recommendation, but what i have is working. Maybe your air pressure is too low or depth setting too shallow?

Increasing pressure only made them fold up on the skin. They would go through the first layer and then just fold up.

Porter-Cable "chisel tipped" 1/4 inch crown staples. That's what goes through two layers of .030... I bought 10,000 (two boxes) on Amazon. I use 3/4 inch long crown staples on my skin. Make sure the staples are not going to protrude through your thin walls before using them. Just to make sure I usually use 1/2 inch around the windows and doors. I keep them to a minimum too because they create dimples that show outside of the window frame some times.

What are people using to attach the sheet metal skin on the underside of the trailer to the subfloor? I pulled off some pretty big staples during demo that would require an expensive tool to replicate. Would the 18 gauge staples do the job?
I just picked up a Ridgid air stapler for $40 from craigslist. I love Ridgid tools.
