Hi everybody! I'm new to this forum, but I've owned a 1976 Play-Mor 19 foot travel trailer for a couple of years. I have an issue that I need help with.
The trailer has dual axles. Recently, I got back from a camping weekend and noticed that one of my rear wheels was almost rubbing the wheel well. When I pulled everything apart, it became apparent that the bearings had completely failed on that side and the drum became loose. The upshot is that the drum rubbed directly on the spindle, ruining both of them.
I've pulled the axle off the trailer without issue. It's a 73" hubface to hubface drop axle with a 4" drop. So far, pretty standard. I've found a replacement for the axle without issue. Where I'm running into trouble is finding an appropriate drum. The current drum looks like it was originally set up for trailer brakes, but there are no brakes inside. Not a problem as the trailer is pretty light and stops without issue.
However, both the hub and the drum are a 4 lug design. I've found an axle with a 4 hole hubface, but for the life of me I can't find a 4 lug drum to work with my current wheels. Everything I'm finding is 5, 6 or more lugs as the 4 lug design is a relic of the past. Does anyone know where I can find a 4 lug drum? If I can't find one, I'll need to replace the entire axle and wheel assembly (axle, both hubs, both drums, and both rims and tires). Obviously, I'd rather not do that, especially because then my rear rims won't match the rims on the front axle.
Help?

Remeasured some things. Looks like it's actually a 79" hubface axle. The lugs are 4 x 9.5". I also figured out that the current drums are Dexters. They're marked "8-147" and one is marked "10 CFD" and "494". Hunting online now.

Your going to find 4 lug wheels on a lighter duty axle usually 2000 lb rating , 3500 pound up rated axles are normally 5 lug or more. Not always the case but usually.

You stated that there were no brakes (shoes?) inside the rear drums. I'm taking a shot in the dark here by suggesting that although both axles are the same, only the front axle needs working brakes, so is your problem that the bearing race inside the drum/wheel assembly shot? I' wondering if a shop could just rebore that drum for a new bearing and race, and hence reuse the existing drum. Larger bearing O.D. and proper I.D. to fit the new axle... I'll bet many older two axle trailers didn't have 4 wheel brakes. There are a gazillion different size bearings out there but you might have to go to a speciality house. Good luck.
