I want to share these couple of links with my friends on here. A whole city in Canada has gone up in smoke over the last two days. The wildfire is so out of control that it has consumed one City of 80,000 people (they were all evacuated) and they are now having to evacuate people in their path. We have a lot of friends connected to our church living there. They have lost everything. One interesting aspect, is that they were interviewing trailer owners, and talking about how they are best equipped for an emergency evacuation like this, and they are not as dependant on the government for help.. The videos are truly terrifying..imagine driving out through this! www.cbc.ca/player/play/678831683904/www.cbc.ca/player/play/2688141554/

LadyW, we've been watching in awe as the story has unfolded so far, including people running out of fuel as they evac'ed because there was none available in Ft Mc when people were told to leave. We are saddened for the loss of such magnitude, but also the untold loss of wildlife, and pets, and their habitat as well.

Many Canadian's have been stepping up, gas stations giving fuel away, and people driving there with cans of gas. However, it's basically coming down to a New Orleans's type of event except by fire instead of water. It is going to take years to recover.. and it's not over yet.

It is awful. My husband read me an article about it last night. I'm so sorry for those families. We had 10,000 acres burn in our NP and was spreading rapidly and becoming a concern for my friends whose property bordered the park. We had days with no rain and then last Wed. it started raining and hasn't stopped for over a week now. Fortunately, no homes or lives were lost.
My family was hit hard by Katrina, not in LA but in MS, where the storm actually came ashore. It is devastating, and takes years to reconstruct, and you never totally recover, you just survive and take it one day at a time and move on. Reconstruction does have its benefits but I know that is no consolation to all the people who have lost all their material possessions and their entire town!

There is just nothing good about this except for the inspiring aspect of the incredible resilience of people under enormous stress. We were on "vacation" in New Mexico during the Los Alamos fires and it was heartbreaking to see so many displaced people struggling to find a place to stay while we were on "vacation". We'll hold these displaced folks "In the light".

Our church is a partnership church with one in Fort McMurray. They have suffered catastrophic loss among the membership of their congregation. So it puts a painful face on it when you know the people. We are planning to do some fundraising we can channel directly to them. But I am not sure whats left of the city so its not an easy fix!

We listen to CBC radio all day every day. It just gets worse every report. Horrific, awful, devastating.

It's amazing how something as horiffic as this brings out the best in people. Our city is the closest major centre 6 hours south of Fort McMurray and to see the outpouring of support to the thousands of evacuees is moving.
It's still not clear of the level of destruction but entire neighbourhoods are flattened by the fire. An estimated 2000 structures so far.
We had a similar disaster in 2011 when the town of Slave Lake was virtually desroyed forcing 9000 people fleeing.
We haven't had any rain to speak of since the snow left so the forests are so incredibly dry and that city is cut into the heart of the forest.
