I bought an extra tire, wheel, and baby moon for a spare and am planning to get a bumper made with a mount for it. But, the spare will have to sit off center to avoid the nicely lit license plate holder. Also worried about adding such extra weight at the back of our little 13 foot camper. Wondering if it might be a better idea to build a mount under the frame. We already have a drop floor, and the spare could be set at least as high as that. Harder to get at, but at least I carry those aluminum screw jack levelers that could be called upon to help removing and resetting. Opinions?

Ours is also off center on our Compact. The only problem we've had is that it sits just a little too low for our taste.

Greetings, 'My Little Shasta'69,13', has the spare mounted horizontally under the front floor. The PO put it there and it's easy to access, I check the air pressure before trips. It appears that my axle had been flipped so I ride high. I was glad the tire was under there. I'm putting an aluminum lawn chair hanger on my back 2x8 wood bumper. I moved the license plate and light to the left to open a space. In the end it'll look balanced. Has to look good it's a Shasta!

I went to the junkyard and snatched a cable crank-up do-dad from a ford pick-up. I used carriage bolts to secure it under the floor, extended the crank rod, and got a mini spare that went up tight.

My 61 Shasta compact is way too low to put it under it. I don't know yet what I will do for a spare carrier. However, my thought is the tongue. Even though it is pretty crowded with battery, jack and propane, I think I can find room for it. However, if not, I will simply throw it in the trunk of my tow vehicle. I have a spare tire under my 05 Colorado and other than making sure it is aired up, I have never seen it. So, I don't want that to occur with my Shasta so it will be more visible. Kind of the old saying "out of site, out of mind". I could tell you some stories about my spare tire on my boat which I carry under the bow and have for several years but you get the drift. Keep it visible and it will be there when you need it. Hide it and it may not serve its purpose. Carrying an "unusable spare" is a waste of time.

Under the bed whenever possible. I built the bed width with a space of 27" so the spare will fit.
I like to leave the rear open, and install a receiver tube for a removable bicycle rack.

A person can debate where to carry a spare forever and for every good reason to carry it there, you will find two reasons why that is a bad idea. The most important thing is mount it where you will check its condition and air pressure on a regular bases and in a place that you are willing to access in the mud on the side of the road when you need it. We all know flats never happen in nice weather in a decent place to change it. Also make sure it doesn't subtract to much weight off the hitch our you might induce an unsafe swaying condition.

A few weeks ago when I was applying POR 15 to the frame on our FAN, I had my first introduction to the "spare". It was mounted under the camper, behind the axle. It was held up with a strange criss-crossed arrangement of chain, bolted to the frame with totally rusted hardware. My first thought was, "Jeez, that sure would be hard to get to when there's a flat."
Then, I cut all of the chain and removed the "spare" only to find that it was the original size, bias ply tire on a wheel that is a different size than the ones on the new axle (a PO had installed). I'm with '61 Shasta..gonna put it in the tow vehicle. Easy to check, easy to find.

Trying to get a spare rim & tire for my 1969 Shasta Compact. Does anyone know where to get a rim & tire or atleast what type size was on my camper ? We're not sure what is on there is correct.

I bought a spare carrier from Northern Tools (harbor Freight also carries it) for $20. Mounted fine on rear bumper.. you can place it at any spot. BUT.. tire hang way too low for speed bumps!! Went o Camp Out near Miami, and they sold me a used one for $20. Works great!

This is the spare on my Vacationaire. I think this spare mount was original. Having matching wheel covers helped the looks. Best, Paul B
