Hello All!!
I can't believe I've been working on my trailer for a year and a half and only just now found this forum...I have read and read and read and thought I had scoured the internet for a helpful forum that wasn't going to charge a "membership fee". I had all but given up when I found VTT! This forum is AWESOME!!
I am just going to come out and say that I have already broken a few of the "rules" regarding vintage trailers (For starters I gooped) but now that I'm here I hope to keep things on the straight and narrow from here on out. I'll be asking questions of those of you who have much more experience than myself.
Please meet Ziggy, she's a 1966 Kit Companion. I received her from my hippy neighbors. They had asked my husband who they could call to have her hauled to the dump. I had been interested in redoing an older trailer for some while, so after talking with my husband and thinking on it for a week or 2 I called them to ask if I could have it. On Labor Day 2014 we pulled her home.
Ziggy the day we brought her home
I LOVE her aqua appliances
I will add more pictures soon of my progress so far. Please be gentle, constructive criticism appreciated!

Oh and Ziggy is short for "Z igiel" which is Polish for "From the needles" to commemorate my excitement of watching her rise from being buried in 20 years of pine needles.

Welcome! It's so nice to hear that there are still free trailers out there. The turquoise appliances are fabulous. I like that the shape is still closer to the ham than the newer toaster style. Zingy will be awesome when you're done.

Welcome! Glad you found us. Trailer looks good, and that's a good story.
I'd like to be first in line if you want to sell that stove :-)

Welcome! I'm currently finishing up a 66 Kit Companion. Small world. It was a mess, but finally getting back to being a trailer again. Here's a link to the photos: 66kittrailer.shutterfly.com/picturesAll the skin is on and one window to go. Yay.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone! I love how supportive and helpful this group is. Here are some pictures of my progress so far.
Inside back wall, now I know I pulled it apart backwards and it makes so much sense having done it this way why all of you do it the other way around.
Rebuilt back wall framework.
Rebuilt access door frame.
Back skin back on!
New flooring!!
Curtain and Upholstery fabrics.
I have also rewired and replaced the tail, marker and clearance lights with LEDs. I found LED taillights that exactly matched the size of the original lights that were all there but very aged and fragile.

Is it the standard 6'8"? I would like to put a little storage unit on the side of my gaucho like yours has, but still keep enough room to sleep. Just wondering what the magic number would be for width in order to do that.

The Kit inside dimension is 80", about 83 +/- outside so close to 7 feet. Mid to late 60s did have a little wider stance. My 68 Starflyte is wider yet.

Hi All
I am so excited to have found this site and forum. I'm a brand spankin' new owner of a 16' 1966 Kit Companion trailer. But mine looks different; mine has a bathroom. Anyone else? Mine was completely gutted by the previous owner so I have just the shell with the bathroom and closet at the tail end. I need everything BUT most importantly, advice. The frame, skin, floor, windows and wiring have all been replaced and/or repaired. Any help you can give me regarding lights, fabric, appliance etc would be appreciated. Thank you!

OK, so I put off making posts of my progress because I started my project wrong and didn't want the negative comments but then I realized I have a right to be proud of my finished project and I am going to post regardless of what others may say. Besides I did rectify my mistakes by pulling back the skins, replacing sills, and skirts as well as much of the framing. Yes, I used trim moulding instead of gimp because...well, I think it looks neat and I am not perfect at cutting paneling. I also **gasp** painted the interior because the new paneling and the old didn't match. As I said I am proud of the finished project and the fact that with some help from my husband and daughter we have a functional, safe trailer that we love.
We took Ziggy out on her Maiden Voyage over the weekend to our family reunion and the trip was an awesome success!!

Hi Ziggy, I just registered as a member to respond to your post. I was going to wait to register, because, like you, I started my project incorrectly. From the inside. In my defense, I was afraid to expose the camper to the elements. ( I only have a tarp for cover,) Since finding this awesome forum, I have removed all the side front and back skins, and have replaced all the rotted sills and wall framing.( I'm working on the rotted floor joists now.) Your camper looks awesome and I think you've done a great job! I have a 1971 Lance Camper 17'. Lance still makes campers, and strangely enough, still have my floor plan! Enjoy your beautifully rebuilt camper! Mulia

Your Ziggy looks wonderful, nice job, best of it all though, it now is as safe as any camper will ever be.

I started on the inside mostly because I was afraid of pulling the skins, thinking that they were what was holding everything together. After finding this forum and learning, after the fact, that you should work from the outside I pulled the skins and did the repairs correctly. I know some things aren't the way the experts would have done it but I know Ziggy is much stronger and safer than originally built and I am proud of that. I have learned a lot from this forum and am thankful for its existence. Good luck on your Lance!!
