Good News. We are going with WINGS! The Captain will fly. We also decided on all new appliances. The old ones work but for how long, and I'm just not comfortable with pilot lights. Unless it's a Marvel or Servel I don't think it's worth saving. So new Dometic refrigerator. New Atwood room heater and water heater. There will be a Fantastic Fan in both the main trailer and the bath room. All lights will be 12vdc. There will be 110vac outlets for when hook ups are available. Two batteries and a 30 amp service with a converter. New water tank and pump. Probably a new toilet. Type is still up in the air. All new metal skin. The paint scheme will be original blue stripe on white body. It's going to be Bright White to match the Suburban tow vehicle. Of course all the standard rot will be replaced. All new skirt boards. New front to rear framing and paneling. All new wall paneling. New sheet vinyl. All new running lights. Top it off with a full room awning. Is Atwood your preferred water heater?

Yes only because they have been around forever and when you need to replace them the new ones fit in the old holes perfectly. They work great and are very affordable. What more could you ask for? This one will be the larger 10 gallon heater because this trailer is going to be used mostly by females.

Ah, ok, so it's not tankless. I will be adding one, not replacing one, and space will be an issue so I'm looking for tankless. We won't have an inside shower, but I want to have hot water in the sink, and am toying with the idea of trying to rig something up to use it for a hot water outside shower as well. If you have any ideas for me I'd love to hear them!

We needed this one to work for primitive camping with no hookups.

That's pretty big. Do you have any experience with tankless water heaters? They get pretty hot. They use a lot of gas because they have to heat water so quickly as it runs through the internal coils. You need the room to house the water heater properly with enough open area around it to be safe. same with the vent going through the roof, and you will need at least a half inch gas line to supply it with propane. Lot's of propane... Also if you don't have enough pressure they don't work well at all. I read 30 psi minimum or the product won't work. Off grid you will be using a 12vdc pump. Will it handle the pressure? Even the High Pressure Sur-Flo only delivers 1.4 gpm and you need over 3gpm for this thing to work. I would do some research before I bought one of these. Oh... And it needs 110vac also so how ya gonna use it off grid? BTW the high volume pump that won't work runs on 110vac also. I've read a lot of pros and cons concerning tankless water heaters over the years because I've been in construction most of my life.

No, I have no experience with tankless, or with vintage trailers just looking for a way to have hot water out of the sink, and preferably not rely on electricity. Also I'm trying to figure out a way to use it for an outside shower too. Our kitchenette is on the back side wall (not door side) so I was thinking if I could fit something in those lower cabinets it would be as big a deal to have a vent or opening on that side of the trailer.

The tankless one we put in Hamlet is gas, uses very little (we don't take long showers on the road). I knew how it works, but have forgotten the particulars, all I know is that the pilot is lit by a battery, and it happens automatically when water flows through the pipe. We always turn off the gas when we're not using it, and it's vented up through the side of the trailer. It's worked well for us.

Coleman used to make a portable on demand water heater. It was supposed to hang on a tree for tent camping, but haven't seen one in a while. The more expensive ones last longer. Here'a link to a few on Fleabay: www.ebay.com/bhp/portable-propane-water-heater

hamlet's all covered up right now, but I went online and found this one. It looks very much like ours, except the maker is different. I can't remember offhand who made it. It is very simple, and probably not right for long, relaxing showers. It runs a little differently on shore water than it does on a pump from the tank. Shore works better since the supply is constant, but it still gives a good hot shower or water for doing dishes. We mounted it behind the porta potty in the "bathroom." Because of the curve of the wall, it doesn't take away an space form the area.

So do you all think it would be OK to install one of these portable ones even though they say for outdoor use only? As long as it's vented well?

Can you explain how you are able to get hot water both in your sink and use for shower? This is what I want to do and not sure if it would require switching the hose where the water goes or if there could be 2 hoses?

We vented it out the side. The hose for the shower is long enough to use for rinsing dishes. I still heat a bit of water on the stove for washing and rinsing for just a few dishes, but for a meal where we are having soup or a salad in addition to the main course and dessert, we use the shower hose to rinse them in the open door of the shower. It's not necessarily pretty, but it's simple and it works just fine. And yes, we do sometimes have a full on three course dinner. I love to cook, and we both love to have company in Hamlet for a meal, so the shower hose comes in really handy.
