I have only ever seen two other 65 Field and Stream trailers, and only one interior. This trailer was "professionally restored", but they seem to have removed the front corner cabinets. I would love to move the icebox and leave out the empty corner cabinet as well, but wonder if it provides any type of vertical support. What do you guys think?

The top cabinet in the Compact (and I bet all campers) is screwed into the side wall framing. On my Shastas, the screws along the top and bottom were just bent over the birch panel to eliminate any space. I think the top cabinet keeps the camper from shifting too much side to side.
I think... The kitchen and wardrobe eliminate side wall buckling and shifting. The bed/couch supports the rear.
Every little bit helps. Even the windows.
Without the cabinets I think one teenager could push the thing over.

I'm a bit confused about the two photos since the window sizes are different. The one without side cabinets looks like a much wider window opening. I do not think the absence of the two corner cabinets are critical. The upper and lower cabinetry across the front should suffice imo. I am sure you are aware of this thread, but if not, you may be able to enter into discussions with other owners of '65 F&S campers. www.facebook.com/fieldandstreamtraveltrailers

I've posted on that thread and that's where I found the other kitchen photo. I think hers might be a different year or model as the body is not the same, but the kitchen is virtually the same. I found one identical trailer there but the guy never returned my message

Most campers have no vertical support up front. Just the horizontal connection with the upper cabinet. I had to laugh the first time I saw nails bent over on the side walls from that cabinet but that's the only thing holding the walls together when they are first hung to the trailer.

One wall to wall 'sundries' cabinet above the front window will give you all the shear strength you need at that upper front area. Yah, no icebox on the counter top.

What Moiltec said; that front horizontal holds the walls at the right width when the trailer is built, or rebuilt. The vertical cabinetry is the real strength hence remarks about "gutted". Unlike a house, internal verticals do the hard work. All the quasi random 1X framing is basically something to hang the inside and outside skins to. In your case, some additional cabinetry in the galley might be a plus but it sure doesn't need to go all the way down to the counter top and take up work space. You also don't have 'head bang' restrictions like those of us with front dinettes. Permission for artistic freedom!
