I thought I'd share my test board before tossing it. The camper I'm working on now had a brownish tint to the wood even after sanding it down. I added a little Mixol 21 Terrabrown to Amber shellac for the last coat. The bottom is three coats of straight Bullseye Amber, middle had 10 drops of tint per cup and the top was 25 drops per cup. I went with the middle on the one wall near older birch.

I have been experimenting with different stains prior to shellacking. I have so many test boards now...maybe the mixol is next!

I did the same test board mania.
mixol chestnut wasn't bad either.
I bought also bought Ruby shellac flakes and mixed a small batch to test. I did the last coat on one board with Ruby which gave it a nice reddish tint.

Hi nccamper, I'm playing around with shellac, and since I know photos don't really do colors justice, are you able to explain the subtle differences between chestnut / terra brown / ruby? You thought ruby was too red? Was chestnut somewhere in the middle? The amber shellac is a lot too orange for me.

Chestnut had sort of an orange shade to it. Terra darkened the shellac on the brown side. Ruby was an odd option because I bought flakes not Mixol and combined dissolved Ruby into the amber. Harder to adjust. My sense is you would need a lot of Ruby if you really wanted to lean heavy towards red.

Thanks! I was leaning toward chestnut because it looked reddish but glad to know it's orange-y. I'll go with the Terra. Just curious: did you try any boards using mixol in clear shellac?

Mixing it with clear would create a very mild color unless you really pour it in. I consider mixol an additive.
