Hi all, Have any of you seen this type of vent? It has been placed at the back of where the fridge is located. I have not seen one like this on any of the campers. What do you think? I would like to replace it since it's dinged up. Thanks.

Don't know what type refrigerator is in there now, but it appears the original was either a propane-only, or maybe a gas/electric combo. That type vent was used to give full air flow to the propane models, which generate quite a bit of heat. Shasta also used this type vent (or something similar) for water heaters. This particular type was quite common on the mid-60's models, may have had a couple variations. I have seen them on the larger units as well...the Starflyte, 16SC, and the Super, that I remember just off hand. P.S. I think the existence of the vent may have been a large option on the Compacts, most if not all earlier Compacts were furnished with iceboxes.

Thanks so much. Yes, the fridge must have been propane and was replaced with an electric one. The camper is all electric now except of course for the stove. I suppose I could remove the vent but then the option to switch to an electric/propane fridge would be eliminated. Do you know where I should for a new top section. As you can see it is damaged.
Thanks.

Agreed. ^^
Finding a replacement may be the biggest "needle-in-a-haystack" search you would ever see. Repairing it may well be a lot easier than you might imagine.
Another option might be finding a metal fabrication shop in your locale. It might cost a couple bucks to do, but you have plenty enough left there to be a great template for a re-pop. A good metal shop would not have any problem duplicating it.
Either way you go, might I suggest putting some screening over the vents on the inside...never hurts to keep the insects out.

You might consider having a compartment door made for that area. The fridge vent is ugly (yup, one of my trailers has one) Definitely louver the bottom to allow the electric fridge to breathe. I'd store what you have in case you do decide to go with a propane fridge.

Thanks everyone!
Vikx, can you elaborate on what your idea of a compartment door would look like?
Thanks

Vikx, Thanks for the photo. Looking left to right, I see a vent and compartment door below the second window. Is that what you are talking about? I was thinking I might just take that small upper portion off and just add a flat piece of metal with no vents. BTW I looked at your pictures; you did awesome job renovating!
Thanks, Marie

Thanks Marie!
The owner of the Land Commander opted to go with a new propane/electric fridge, so the top vent is the "chimney" if you will.It has two sets of louvers, side to side (facing back) on the inside and top to bottom outside. The lower louvers are combustion air vents. It opens for access to the burner and gas connections. Sure looks better than that bulbous "thing" hanging out. Altho I saved mine, pry will never use it.

Rain Dancer , my '65 Shasta Compact has that vent too and it's in about the same condition as yours. I plan on using it. My propane fridge was replaced with an electric by PO.
