Hi there friends, I am purely curious what you all think about an idea the wife and I have. We want to keep solid wood paneling in our compact but we think it would be really neat to use some cedar paneling made for closet lining. It's beautiful, repels bugs, is light, and fairly water resistant by nature compared to other woods. Wanted to seal it with Behr water sealer as a precautions, which incidentally will bring out the color. The idea is so exciting, I wonder if anyone has thought of that before. It already has some solid pine cabinets installed. I see a cabin themed camper shaping up ! Would love your thoughts whenever you have a moment, thanks!

It might be very nice. Depends on how dark you want the interior.
Sealing with water sealer isn't necessary. Fix the trailer first, then do the interior=no leaks. The way these trailers are constructed makes it very difficult to use smaller boards, as the plywood lends a lot of sheer strength to the trailer overall.
Hang around with us. We all enjoy lending opinions.

My thought, how thick is the paneling? Are you planning to replace the paneling or cover the existing? Covering is a bad idea. I agree with Vikx, no water sealer necessary and if you do, be sure you use a product intended for interior use. You don't want to sleep in a camper with a toxic sealer on the wall.

Good morning! Well I see what you all are saying about the sealer, I certainly intend to get the outside fixed before the interior stuff. Not sure the thickness maybe 3/8 at most, and was gonna be placed on top of plywood as a backer and support. Nothing on the walls right now, the previous guy put some terrible mdf cardboard paneling in it. No no.

The wife has been sealing the cedar panels! So glad this color will be locked in. Plywood as the structural backing, and this as simply the front facia. When we get to the stage of putting these up I will be drooling.

Hi there sorry I never saw the response.. I am not sure probably leave what it up there its a nice glossy white paneling of some sort. Not elaborate but neutral and in decent condition from the previous owner.

That's cool. And when you're not camping, you can use it as a cedar closet.

Thanks Vintagebruce! Yes I love the way it looks I viewed the photos. Even better is ours is the aromatic red cedar so it's quite colorful. I'm going the same route as originally in the trailer... sort of. Just not birch.. Haha

Hi there all! A little while back you had some good advice for me and also expressed liking the idea of the cedar, well I wanted to share a photo of how it's starting to look! Back wall, this isn't fixed to wall yet I just placed it there to see what it looks like. It's so cool.

Thanks Dan, man does it smell splendid for sure! Backed by 1/4 inch plywood and the cedar panels themselves are just closet liners thickness so less than half an inch thick total together. Not very heavy I don't think.

And friends this is funny, all of you know how these vintage trailers are far from square like the newer campers, well the side wall of a 67 Compact is more like half an octagon. Haha. So I had fun trying to cut out the backing for the cedar, measure 10 times cut twice right? This is part of the door side wall. The wall has 2 more feet towards the door on the left of this but I did that on purpose because it's a little different in that area, putting in a custom built wardrobe.

I LOVE the smell of cedar but don't think I would like to sleep in a cedar lined closet... I would spend some time in the trailer and see if y'all tolerate it well. It is beautiful. Sealing would lessen the odor.
