This old dark varnish is dark as a cave. It is about as attractive as a mud fence. This dark stuff has to go. Is there an easy way.

Is it stained or is the varnish tinted? Stain will be tough. I like Jasco to remove paint or varnish but it's toxic. There are gentle alternatives like Citrustrip.

No stain, just 60 year old varnish. I can scrap the varnish off with a sharp knife then it looks like new wood.

Nope. Like nccamper, I like the solvent based products because they tend to be much faster and work much better, at least in my experience.

I have also used a method passed down over a thousand years without nasty chemicals... Sandpaper.
