The door lock has a key broken off in the hole. Before I take it apart I thought I better ask if anyone has removed a lock form a door. I don't know what to expect, I don't want to open a can of worms or loose parts down inside the door. I need to remove the broken key then see if I can get the lock cleaned and oiled so it works. Maybe I can have a key made from the broken key piece. I have a 1955 Phoenix camper trailer. Can the local hardware store make keys for these old trailers?

Those 3 screws just hold the 2 pieces together with the door in between....Nothing will fall in the door. Take it apart and take the whole thing to a locksmith. He should be able to put a new lock in it

Here ya go, this should help... vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/105/bargman-door-lock-exploded-view?page=1&scrollTo=419There is one part that is in need of caution. There is a ball bearing in the internal works, part "13", this is the only thing that can give you trouble, but not when you are removing the lockset from the door. The replacement locks for your particular lock are available from time to time. If you are not sure of yourself, there are plenty of folks that have taken theirs to a locksmith and had keys and locks replaced for fairly inexpensive pricing, and then all is well again. Don't panic, it'll get fixed!

The replacement part you need can be purchased at Vintage Trailer supply.I have found they are easier to replace when not on the door and you can clean and lube at this time.

BY ALL MEANS disassemble the lock, degrease and clean it ( use a can of brake cleaner spray) and then when you reassemble, use a bit of hi quality gun or machine oil or grease. A lot of crud and gunk builds up inside these locks over 50 years!

Whatever you do, don't over-lube it though. Gun oil is a good idea, but it will drool down the door if you use too much. So will Thrust (penetrating oil) or 3-in-1 oil....wonder how I know this??

Part #1 the cylinder will not come out?
There is a tiny 1/16" hole next to the cylinder. It might be a release pin? It will not push. Cylinder wiggles easy and pivots at the tiny 1/16" hole like something is holding it at the hole.

Gary,
Mine had a small hex-head set screw in that hole. That was rusted in place. I took the whole thing to the locksmith.

I can see the pin in the hole it has no screw driver slots and no hex head. When I wiggle the cylinder the pin moves. I think the pin should push in to release the cylinder but the pin can not push with a broken key in the cylinder. Broken key needs to come out.

I work on and sell these locks and can tell you if you are going to replace the lock cylinder then drill out the brass pin. With the key broken off in the cylinder driving it down to remove the cylinder might be impossible. If you can get forceps or some pin type object to remove broken key that would be best then a locksmith can make you a new key. Otherwise drill out pin then remove cylinder and order from Vintage Trailer Supply a new lock cylinder. To install new cylinder make sure key is inserted in new cylinder, push the pin down into cylinder, insert into lock, rotate key which will drive the pin upward into hole locking it in place. There is a YouTube video on this. Rick

I bought the trailer with no key. I got the broken key out. I had a new key made but it does not work. Next I will drill out the pin to remove the cylinder. I ordered a new $15 cylinder with 2 keys. Locksmith has minimum fee $85 + tax to remove broken key and $25 + tax to re key the lock. Those are crazy prices. I saved $121 new cylinder with keys will be here next Wed.

IF in doubt take it to a locksmith before you make a costly mistake and ruin the lock. Some locks are vary expensive to replace. The last lock I took to my locksmith cost me $12.00 with to new keys.

I agree. The locks are expensive. If you have the key out. Do you have a spare key? Did the spare key not work? If not, a good locksmith can make a key. This should always be your first step.
If making a key doesn't work, remove the cylinder. If you have the key out make every effort to drive pin down to remove cylinder. Spray some penetrating oil in pin slot, give it some time and try again to drive it down. Hopefully it will go down and you can exchange the cylinder.
Does this make sense?
